General direction/supervision means employees receive general instructions usuallycovering only <strong>the</strong> broader aspects of <strong>the</strong> work. In some situations, detailed instruction may benecessary. The work of experienced and competent employees is subject to final checkingand, only as required, progress checking.Limited direction/supervision means employees receive limited instructions which clearlystate objectives. Employees have a significant degree of competence and experience and areable to achieve <strong>the</strong> objective by conforming to instructions but with minimal guidance.Broad direction/supervision means employees normally receive instructions in <strong>the</strong> form ofbroadly stated objectives. Extensive knowledge and experience enables employees tocontribute to <strong>the</strong> determination of goals and objectives.General supervision means a line management function and refers to <strong>the</strong> supervision givento professional/specialised and o<strong>the</strong>r staff. It consists of <strong>the</strong> allocation and direction, oversightand co-ordination of <strong>the</strong> work of subordinate staff.Professional supervision means a quality control function and refers to supervision given toano<strong>the</strong>r staff member who requires <strong>the</strong> exercise of specialised/professional judgement.General professional guidance means direction and guidance given on a range ofprofessional assignments. An employee has discretion in selecting <strong>the</strong> most appropriatemethod of completing <strong>the</strong>se, and conformity with directions is measured by satisfactorycompletion of allocated specialised assignments.Develop means to develop.Discipline means an identified occupation; field of specialisation; defined body ofprofessional knowledge, skills and expertise.Element means a component, part of.Elementary means rudiments of first principles, in <strong>the</strong> first stages, slight.Enforcement means an act of enforcing, giving effect to.Establish means to set up, to institute, to place on a firm basis.Exercise means to bring to bear or employ actively (as in exercising authority or influence).Experienced means having worked in a relevant field for sufficient time to have sufficientunderstanding of <strong>the</strong> basic principles of <strong>the</strong> discipline, to have ability to successfullyundertake <strong>the</strong> majority of normal requirements of <strong>the</strong> work situation and to have a goodappreciation of <strong>the</strong> activities involved.Considerable experience means having worked in a relevant field for sufficient time toensure a competence to undertake and advise on a full range of normal requirements of <strong>the</strong>work situation and to have <strong>the</strong> ability to perform a variety of activities involving special,unusual or complex features of <strong>the</strong> work.Community Sector Multiple Enterprise Agreement 2009
