With this approach, approximately 50 percent or more ofthe energy imparted to the resincame from direct thermal conductionrather than mechanically inducedfriction. Melting occurredsimultaneously at the screw flight'sroot and the point of contactbetween the resin particles andbarrel wall. In the conventionaldesign, melting only occurred at thebarrel wall. The FIREROD heater's capabilityto provide multiple pin constructionfor increased ampacity, internalthermocouple for temperaturecontrol and direct hook-up tothree-phase power supply werefactors in selecting Watlow forthis application.Additional benefits of the new designincluded lower melt temperatures, higher throughput capacity andimproved gear pump energyefficiency (lb/hr/hp).ExtrusionDie and Former <strong>Heaters</strong>239
