The liquid glue wasejected onto the part through adispensing gun heated by anotherFIREROD heater.Watlow’s FIREROD provided thecustomer with benefits includinghigh watt density, UL® recognition, superior lead arrangement andtrouble-free performance for their hotmelt equipment application.Cartridge and SiliconeRubber <strong>Heaters</strong> EliminateBurn-Out In Hot MeltEquipmentProblem:Hot melt equipment is used for highspeedpackaging operations as wellas automated product assembly. Forexample, CB, radio, TV <strong>com</strong>ponents,cabinets, automotive parts andcorrugated cartons are assembledby handgun adhesive applicators. If the hose and gun are not heated, the adhesive would solidify and clogthe application system. In this application, a cartridge heaterwas frequently burning-out in thedispensing gun due to frequentcycling and poor heat transfer.Construction Details MakeTubular <strong>Heaters</strong> For SkinPackaging A SuccessProblem:The contents of a package arevisible, yet protected, when usingskin packaging. This systemimmobilizes the product(s) underplastic film and seals them fromcontamination. To do this, a radiant heater bank isenergized to soften a plastic film to apliable, thermoformable state. Thisplastic film is then applied by:1. A frame holding the filmdescending over the product(s)2. A vacuum drawing the film intotight conformity with theproduct(s)3. The film frame being lifted andthe packaged product(s)automatically discharging fromthe machine, which rethreadsthe film4. The equipment is then ready forthe next packaging cycleThis customer was relying on a<strong>com</strong>petitor's tubular heater, whichfailed rapidly. The <strong>com</strong>panyattributed the failure to excessivemoisture in the manufacturingequipment.Solution:The Watlow sales representativeinspected the failed units anddiscovered that the problemresulted from spot-welding theresistance wire to the cold pin. TheWatlow tubular heater had a 360-degree fusion weld between theresistance wire and cold pin. Thecustomer chose the superior Watlowtubular once he understood thereason for his heater failures.Watlow tubular elements weremounted onto an aluminum reflectorthat was rectangular in shape. Theproducts to be packaged were thenautomatically conveyed under theheater/reflector assembly.Packaging<strong>Heaters</strong>385
