W A T L O WReference DataWiring PracticesThis section is devoted to thermalsystem wiring practices. In thissection are general guidelines forsuccessful integration of the differentthermal system <strong>com</strong>ponents—heaters, temperature sensors, temperature controllers and powercontrollers. This section is not a stepby-step,how-to manual. It is yourresponsibility to be sure your wiring issafe and meets the requirements ofapplicable agency standards alongwith national and local electricalcodes. If you’re unable to determinewhich method of wiring will best suityour needs, call your nearest WatlowSales Representative. Theirexperience with all types of thermalsystems makes them an invaluablesource for advice. Sales offices arelisted on the back cover of thiscatalog.System wiring is divided into twomain areas—signal wiring and powerwiring. Signal wiring deals with inputsignals (generated by the temperaturesensor) and output signals (generatedby the temperature controller). Powerwiring deals with supply power to thetemperature and power controllersand the current that’s ultimatelydelivered to the heating element.Signal wiring is less straight forwardthan power wiring. Not only does ithave to conform to circuit designs, but must also be installed in sucha way as to minimize the negativeeffects of electrical noise presentin any thermal system. This section will start with wiringsensors to controllers and then wiringpower controllers to temperaturecontrollers. It also offers limit controlwiring examples which provide a<strong>com</strong>prehensive system overview.Wiring Practices for a SuccessfulControl SystemNot long ago the majority of industrialthermal systems were controlled byelectrical/mechanical devices thatwere fairly immune to the negativeeffects of electrical noise. The shortestpath for the wire was the best andonly path. Noise resistant wiringpractices just weren’t a concern. With the advent of today’s electroniccontrollers, awareness of techniquesto minimize the disrupting effects ofelectrical “noise” is critical.Resources and InformationReference Data409
