These packages, including some re-sealable types, are be<strong>com</strong>ing very popular and arepopulating the store shelves ingreater numbers every day. These containers are formed andfilled at high speeds right on theproduction line. <strong>Heaters</strong> that sealthese pouches must be capable ofhandling a variety of packagespeeds while minimizing start-upcycles and improving the reliabilityof the seal between sheets of plasticor silicone impregnated paper.A customer was having difficultiesduring their manufacturing processwhen the product stopped flowingon the production line. The productwas lost to large seals betweenpouches or burned packagingmaterials. The root cause of theproblem was latent heat stored in thebulky heaters typically used insealing equipment. Due to the speedof the filling process, large amountsof food and other materials could belost in a very short period of time.Solution:The manufacturer needed heatersthat could be retrofitted into theircurrent machinery that provided fastthermal response with minimal massand good thermal uniformity along a304.8 mm (12 in.) length. Watlowcustom-designed a specialtymachinedsubstrate and developeda suitable resistor circuit in threedesign iterations that suited thecustomers requirements.Heater Description:• 9.35 mm (0.368 in.) thick 430SSthick film heater of rectangularshape roughly 101.6 x 304.8 mm(4 x 12 in.) long. Heated area onboth sides.• 120V design generating 600 totalwatts of power (300W per side).Circuits were wired in series.• Operating temperature of up to148°C (300°F); 67 wsi developedfrom 60 percent coverage.• Special silicone over-moldedterminations withsilicone/fiberglass lead wires.Notes:With the fast capability, excellentthermal uniformity and a singlesource replacement for three<strong>com</strong>ponents, Thick film heaters werea more cost-effective solution.386
