public accountant for the IRS for 30 years and retired in 1979. He had a lifelong interest<br />

in helping immigrants adjust to life in the United States and was a past chairman of the<br />

Maryland Republican Heritage Council. He had been secretary of the Ukrainian Congress<br />

Committee of America. He was a founder of the Ukrainian Education Association of<br />

Maryland and was co-author of "The Ukrainians of Maryland," published in 1977. He<br />

lectured widely on Ukrainian and Soviet Union history at area schools. He also<br />

championed the rights of the elderly and was a co-founder and board member of Lemko<br />

House, a residence for senior citizens in Fells Point. He was born in Madera, Pa., to<br />

parents who had immigrated from what was then the Austro-Hungarian empire. He<br />

dropped out of high school after the death of his father and went to work in the anthracite<br />

coal mines to help support his family. During the 1930s, he was a member of the Civilian<br />

Conservation Corps. He served in the Army in Europe during World War II and was<br />

recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was discharged with the rank of staff<br />

sergeant. After earning his General Equivalency Diploma, he was awarded a bachelor's<br />

degree in business administration and a master's degree in liberal arts, both from the<br />

Johns Hopkins University. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of<br />

Foreign Wars and St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Baltimore, where services<br />

were held Monday. He is survived <strong>by</strong> his wife of 45 years, the former Wanda Gregorius;<br />

two daughters, Daria Phair of Charles Village and Lisa Basarab of Wyman Park; three<br />

brothers, John Basarab of Falls Church, Va., Paul Fenchak of Lutherville and Andrew<br />

Fenchak of Madera; four sisters, Mary Marks of Guilford, N.Y., Susan Warholic of<br />

Bellcaria, Pa., and Katherine Lumanick and Ann Kohan, both of Ramey, Pa.; and two<br />

BATES, Charlene "CB" (Heresco)<br />

CHARLENE 'CB' BATES, 54 Retired health care specialist Charlene "CB" Bates<br />

(Heresco), 54 of Vineland died on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at the South Jersey Healthcare<br />

Regional Medical Center in Vineland. Born in Quinton, she was a lifelong area resident.<br />

She was a retired health care specialist at the Vineland Developmental Center. Mrs. Bates<br />

formerly worked at Heresco's Market in Quinton, which was owned <strong>by</strong> her parents. Her<br />

hobbies were bird watching, shopping and collecting fairies. She is survived <strong>by</strong> her<br />

husband, Ronald R. Bates; her sister, Charlotte Marich of Bridgeton; her mother-in-law,<br />

Angelina Bates of Collings Lakes; her aunt, Mildred Fletcher; her best friend and<br />

"adopted sister", Vera Butterworth-Bohn of Millville; and her nieces, Lisa and Tammy. A<br />

visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carnesale Funeral Home, 202 S.<br />

Third St., Hammonton, where memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will<br />

BELIN, Clara R. (Harnish)<br />

Clara R. (Harnish) Belin, 92, of Smoke Run, PA passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 at<br />

3:55 AM at the Clearfield Hospital. Mrs. Belin was born in Bigler Twp., PA on August<br />

16, 1915, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Dudjak) Harnish.She was a<br />

member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ramey, and was a homemaker. In 1936 she<br />

married Larry J. Belin, he preceded her in death on March 19, 1975. Surviving are two<br />

sons; Larry E. Belin, Jr. and his wife Delores ; Leroy J. Belin and his wife Phyllis all of
