fighters have flaws !!!! Who lacks power, who hand speed, who has a glass
jaw....Even Louis, the perfect fighting machine, surely could'nt take a punch
like Chuvalo !! Tyson, at the beginning, was very close to perfection but then
he forgot the headmovements.... What flaws did Tyson have atthe
beginning of his career ? Just the short reach !!I never watched the
Ali-Zora Folley fight. Is it true that it was one of the Ali's best fights
?Do you remember that fight ?|
that Cus D'Amato was asked to train Cooney and he refused. This may have been
because he was busy not because he didn't think Cooney had potential. Not sure.|
wasn't sure if people would get the analogy I made comparing Cooney to Cuevas.
After all, Cooney was a tall fighter and Cuevas, in his weight class, was a
short fighter who had to move in to be effective. The point I was making is
that the major tool they both used was the left hook and if someone found a way
to avoid the hook, both of these fighters were beatable. At the time, a lot of
people were saying Sugar Ray Leonard was avoiding Cuevas, who was knocking
everyone out in sight, but I think Leonard would have boxed circles around
Cuevas but if Cuevas would have landed that hook, then Ray may have been some
major trouble. If people remember Cuevas, I am sure they will remember that at
times he was very devastating. |
is that Lewis in best shape is slightly better than Vitali Klitschko (in
best shape). But I don' t think Lennox can come back in top shape at this point
of his career,so... Vitali Klitschko is THE REAL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE
WORDL !He never really lost a fight (against Chris Byrdhe was stopped by
an accident)! He is big, powerful, can take an hell of a punch and has heart !
Good weekend to everybody !!!!!|
first start by saying this is a great site and real tribute to Jerry and boxing
in itself with great fans and interaction. As i have been reading the latest
topic of conversation has been Gerry Cooney. I happen to think that Cooney was
an above average contender who was mishandled by that Great Management team that
was dubbed the Idiot Twins, Mike Jones and Dennis Rappaport. Gerry had great
size and fearce left hook to go with it. As for the shaky chin thats really
questionable. If you look over the Holmes fight he took tremendous shots and
kept coming, you really cant count the Foreman and Spinks fights becouse it is
my beleif by that time with the battles with drug abuse he had not the desire to
be in the ring nor did he belong in it. I belive you rate fighters on there
best night then you would have to go on the one night in Las Vegas after a long
lay off and to me that night was against Larry Holmes "who on that night was at
his best he ever was" and if you go by that Gerry displayed good skills, a goood
chin and a very big heart as it went into the later rounds, against arguable one
of the five or six greatest Heavweights ever, more than most fighters today
would have done with Holmes on that particular night in Vegas.|
Sean !! Has anyone heard how my friend Mike is getting along??|
of good reading, guys. I do have to stick up for Gerry Cooney and Jimmy Young,
both of whom I consider very respectable heavies. Like Greg Page, both had lots
of potential but failed to cash in on it like so many others. Cooney could knock
out Chuvalo, but George is one of the very toughest ever that I've seen. He had
to be, given he was such a poor defensive fighter. Chuvalo and Cooney are huge
opposites where heart and talent are concerned. I wouldn't disparage either for
not having both. Holmes vs. Lewis would bve interesting, I give nod to Lewis for
