when you look back at all the fights that an over the hill tired Ali "won" you
see a pattern.2nd Frazier fight jabs and holds, 3rd Norton fight he losses
gets the decision, Jimmy young fight losses gets the decision, Lyle fight lays
on the ropes losses 11 rounds throws a few pity pat punches ref jumps in and
stops it. 2nd Leon Spinks fights he jabs and holds the whole fight any one else
would be disqualified. The sad part about it is he was tired worn out over the
hill but still made everyone so much money they kept him going 3 or 4 years to
long and now he is a shell of the man he was. He was a great fighter and would
have been something in his retired years. He made alot of people alot of money
at a terrible cost to his health.|
greatness as a fighter are the following fights1)Williams2)Frazier
1-33)Foreman4)Quarry 1-25)Liston 1IN the first and third
fight with Frazier he didn't hold that much and showed a big heart. In the 2
Quarry fights he clearly showed his superiority and Jerry was a champion. In the
first Liston fight the way he survived the fifth round being totally blind
showed his greatness.|
to have a poster from the east coast. Your last post made me realize that Ali's
entire career seemed to be manipulated by unseen forces.I have to agree with
everyone of your examples of his latter career.The responce I get always
surprises me when I say that the Ali vs Liston fights where fixed! That
California surfer dude Kent always argues that he saw the "phantom punch" in
Lewiston.Maine.Fran. do you remember the Dwight"the Camden Buzzsaw" Braxton vs
Matt Franklin lightheavy weight title fights? They had to be seriously
considered for one of the alltime greatest fights.How about Aron "The Hawk"
Pryor vs Alexis Arguelo as best welterweight fights.This site sometimes seems to
be exclusively about Cal.fighters.|
|12/5/03 09:31:54 AM|Massimo|Rome||4||||10|Yo from Rome Steve,Ali'-
Liston 1 wasn't fixed, it's impossible ! Why would Liston have blinded
Ali' if the fight was fixed ? He tried to kill Ali' in the fifth round !|
|12/5/03 10:00:10 AM|steve |N.J.||dmmsrm@comcast.net||||10|Yo from N.J.
Mattisimo,do you have any proof that Liston actually used something on his
gloves to blind Ali?All you have is that redicules ,biased movie that wasn't
even about boxing.In those days,there was always a small amount of rousin dust
in a neutral corner.Fighters would come into the ring, and rub there shoes in it
to prevent slipping in the ring.Is it possible that some of it could have gotten
into Ali's eye? Angelo Dundee perpetuated that myth.And he would say anything
for Ali. |
|12/5/03 10:15:58 AM|Massimo|Rome||4||||10|Steve-They say that Liston
did the same thing in the first fight against Williams and in the Machen fight,
so I think it's very realistic. Anyway, obviously, I can't be sure !|
|12/5/03 10:41:36 AM|steve |NJ||dmmsrm@comcast.net||||10|Massimo,I've never
heard that Liston used those same tactics against Cleveland Williams or Eddie
Machen.not in all the time I've been on this site!|
|12/5/03 10:43:31 AM|Pete|Cleveland||pco@hotmail.com||||10|Re. Ali/Liston 1;
Liston quit, plain and simple. He was being beat to the punch by Ali. His face
was was becoming quite swollen and Liston was the type who lacked courage. He
was accustomed to intimidating and KOing his opponents and if he was not
successful with this approach, he would lose focus. Ali had an excellent corner,
with Angelo Dundee. Ali wanted to quit, when his vision became impaired, but
Dundee wouldn't let him. The "Phantom Punch" in Ali/Liston 2, may or may not
have been legitimate. Ali would have taken Liston regardless. Liston was
finished as a fighter, when he quit on his stool, during their first meeting.|
"phantom punch" too, on clips, and via slo-mo on the VCR. There's a punch all
