Quarry could have come back after his loss to Bob Foster and he did try to
fullfill his potential. I believe if he had gotten the win in most of his close
decision losses, his career would have taken a whole new direction. Mike lost a
questionable decision to Mike Rossman in their second fight (Mike won the first
meeting and was stopped on cuts in the third fight). Mike also lost close
decisions to Pierre Fourie and Yaqui Lopez. fights that a lot of people thought
Mike won. In addition to these fights, he was held to a draw by a fighter named,
I believe, Wagner, which those in attendance said was absolute robbery. They
said Mike was the clear winner. If Mike had one most or all of those
fights, he would have likely gotten another title shot and he could have easily
won the title. After all, he should have had two wins out of three fights
against Rossman, and Rossman ended up becoming a world champion.Mike
just didn't seem to get a fair shake when it came to his fights going the
distance. Which he had to do as he didn't have a big punch like Jerry. Mike
did have excellent boxing skills.|
You can add Jimmy Brown, the great running back, as a wanna be fighter too. I
read that when Ali was in England for the second H Cooper fight Brown, who was
considering being a fighter, got into a slap boxing match with Ali. Afterwards
Brown, being the honest guy he was, said he wanted no part of boxing. He
couldn't believe how inept he felt. What makes this interesting is that Brown is
on a very short list of the greatest athletes of the last century both for his
toughness and athletic ability.I am surprised how no ones mentioned the
Riddick Bowe/Evander Holyfield fights as among the greatest ever. Both of them
were thrillers...oops I mean all 3 were.P S Roadscholarette: What did u
mean by Frasier had an eye problem? Did he have a problem passing a physical or
just a swelling
problem?|
SIZE/POWER discussion is Sam Langford. He was 5'6" (likeme) and knocked out
twice Big George Godfrey and a lot of other big men...To Tubby: Tubby, why
do you think I'm a former boxer ? No, at all ! I' m just a boxing' s fan ! When
I asked if big hands are an advantage for a fighter I had an example in mind:
Emile Griffith. Emile has very small hands. Nino Benvenuti said:" His little
hands were terrible, they penetrate between my bones !". What does it mean that
Ali's knuckles were like potato chips ? They were big or small ? Floyd
Patterson's hands are 12.75in, a little bigger than Ali's hands, not so small !
I have read thatForeman's hands are 12in...Pretty small|
Frazier would have been a good matchup. I would probably go with Joe, who I
respect very much. Too many people just remember Foreman bouncing him around,
but in my book, Joe was a near great. If Joe could beat Ali in their first
fight, I think he would have been Holmes who never could have matched that
effort by Ali.|
