generation of good, bad and indefferent heavies and is rated low on the totem
pole. People compare Tyson to Sonny, but Mike did a whole lot more during his
career in the ring. So as far as I'm concerned he was a great champion, and
would hard for anyone from any era to beat in his prime. I still think Frazier
would beat him prime vs. prime, I can also see him losing by early KO, but we'll
never know for sure. As for Liston vs. Louis. Sonny did have that 7 foot arm
span to deal with, he was a little quicker on his feet and about 14 pounds
heavier than a prime Louis. He also had a habit of bringing that jab back slow
and would be a prime target for a Louis right counter. Both men were fearsome
punchers, but Joe was more accurate than Sonny. I think it would a battle of
jabs for a while, Joe might get hurt by Sonny's hook, maybe knocked down. But
Louis would hurt Sonny, and if Louis hurt you, your finished. Louis by 9th
round KO.|
I have Chuvalo-Alongi and will probably get Quarry-Alongi I somewhere along the
line. Noltimier told me that it is a bad picture, but your guy might have a
better copy.|
a great story about Rick Farris watching Jerry dropping Norton during a sparring
session.I wish someone could contact Bill Slayton to verify it.I still firmly
believe that if Quarry could have gotten to Norton earlier in his career,it
would have made for a much different top 10 situation and maybe even a
difference in the Ali vs Norton trilogy.|
appreciation of Jerry Quarry and his career is not only persisting but actually
seems to be growing among fans of boxing history. It's becomming quite the
phenomena amongst us fading , 50ish,macho guys.I just bought Ernie
Shavers'book,"Welcome To The Big Time".Not to take anything away from any of
these 70's heavywieghts, but they've all got books out! Where the heck is
Jerry's?I can't think of a more fascinating, turbulant, dramatic or tragic life
story than his and his family's!For crying out loud!,they made a movie about Ray
Mancini just because he won a title for his father and killed a guy in the
ring!What about it,Kent and Paul?|
|8/26/02 08:35:33 PM|Gerry Schultz|Ohio||jgschultz@firstam.com||||10|I've
thought for some time that JQ would make a great book, because his life, I
think, has some compelling conflicts:, boxing gloves on at such a young age, the
makeup and attitudes of his family, how he dealt with early success and his
defeats. He does symbolize in these things much that is relatable to other
people. Not just some star's success story, but also a human story. |
tonight!Let's get Micky Rourke to play Jerry during some time periods of his
life.Anyone ever see his movie "Homeboy"? Mickey actually seems to empathise
with fighters with this affliction. They are of a type,Irish, blond, tough.Maybe,if
someone could get him interested,he could at least help with the producing or
financing.Especialy as he seems to have an aquantance with the Quarry family. |
|8/26/02 08:47:50 PM|Gerry Schultz|Ohio||jgschultz@firstam.com||||10|I also
wanted to add, history is giving greater credit to Jerry than he received in the
late 70's, when he was almost derided. I remember when Leon Spinks was "the
man", I asked how a prime vs. prime matchup might go, and I was laughed at for
