I'm not a Stallone basher at all---I enjoyed the movies and characters he's
created---but people were fans of "Rocky" not of Stallone. It's like the
country needed a white champion so badly, they blurred the line between the
sport of boxing and a movie actor playing a boxer, starting to believe the
character was real. I can't imagine Stallone didn't realize that Shavers could
throw a 35% punch and hurt him. I know that Stallone also had Dolph Lundgren
(hope I spelled it right) hit him 50% to the head and 100% to the body for
realistic affects. Apparently, the body shots he got hit with did some internal
damage, including severe ribcage contusions. |
CALIFORNIA||RONNYRAINS@YAHOO.COM||||10|ROAD and Angelo: I cannot agree more,
sadly most people,do not get the aspect of "REEL" LIFE opposed to "REAL life".
thats one reason our own JQ will really never get his due as an all time great
heavyweight,if he's not there, his career should be the go between who is!And I
have never got into discussions on white heavyweights on this post,And read a
column of why Joe Bugner is the best carcausion since ROCKY MARCIANO,They
brought up a lot of points for BUG,mostly whom he fought and survived the rounds
with greats JOE FRAZIER AND ALI (39 ROUNDS ETC.)for some odd reason I was
thinking of Bugner's VALUE AS A TOP HEAVYWEIGHT,only thing was at 6'4" HE was
defensive to the point ALI pitched a shutout in KULA LUMPER,and not much of a
puncher to hurt the top elite,JQ would have beaten him on speed, punching power
and agressiveness, prime for prime, plus the ability for Bugner could never hurt
JERRY---------just an opinion!|
PM|Roadscholarette|Chicago||roadscholarette@hotmail.com||||10|People believe the
media to a ridiculous degree, whatever they see. Years ago, when we were leaving
the theater after seeing Predator (the Arnold movie where an alien has come to
Earth, and hunts a group of mercenaries for sport), we were aghast at the
conversation of some teens who’d also been to the movie. They were talking
almost as if they’d just seen a documentary. I too loved the Rocky movies and
the Stallone character, though we all know there were enough flaws in it to sink
an aircraft carrier. I was very impressed by the athleticism of a pair of
actors, particularly Carl Weathers, but let’s face it folks, if David Letterman
hit Joe Frazier as many times cleanly as Rocky Balboa was hit, he’d go down. The
training scenes were always fun, but as Ali said, “The only chickens I’ve seen
in my camp were on the dinner table!” Can you imagine Frazier, Foreman, Ali,
Quarry, Liston, or Shavers chasing a chicken around?  Also, a catcher
like Balboa, as obviously damaged as he was, wasn’t going to be coming up with
all those sharp, timely, witty quips right and left. I think Quarry
would have decisioned Bugner. I’ve seen him in the gym numerous times (from TV
shows, tapes, and documentaries, not live), and he was a big, strong, fast, and
talented man, but self admittedly in the game for the money and not to get hurt.
He often seemed to be just trying to survive, the old, “try not to lose,” as
opposed to trying to win, deal. I think he had the talent to seriously contend,
but not the mindset. And of course, he was in the most competitive era ever,
which didn’t help.|
Rocky movies sucked.Any real fight fan or fighter would agree.Stallone is a joke
and an egotistical actor.Ya'll go ahead and watch Rocky 7 through 50,you'll
probably be impressed with the boxing skills too.I am starting to side with that
