excuses (though he did, often). Viewers and sportswriters did it for him. They
often reminded me of the little kid who has a bum for a dad who makes him sound
like Captain America to compensate. "Oh, the champ's setting him up," or "he's
going to the rope a dope," or "he didn't train hard enough," or the other guy
got lucky. Never that his opponent might be better, or that Ali's skills were
eroding, or that he was lazy, or that he was relying on the only thing he had
left with any amount of consistency - the ability to take a punch. Didn't train
hard enough!? Does that mean he's stupid too (he wasn't)? A man is going into
the ring, where he could literally be killed, and he hasn't trained hard? C'mon!
:-) As egotistical as he could be, I think Ali in reality was an
insecure man, and not wholly comfortable with winning. Hence, he often
subconsciously crafted his own doom to a point. Of course he continued to win
because (other than conscious or unconcious help from judges), he was better
than most in career two, and better than all, by a country mile, in career one.
Or maybe I should say that in career one, his opponets were worse, a subtle
difference.|
another thing, this one about black boxers commenting about Jerry. I have
spoken to people in the game and everyone I have talked to have a lot of respect
for Jerry. In fact, recently I was trading Jerry stories with a former world
champion, who I won't name here I as my "dear friend" here will say I am name
dropping, but this fighter is black and he and I got a good laugh out of Jerry's
antics.I agree with Paul, that if Jerry ever said anything racially
negative. It was probably in the context of youth and his attitudes did change,
just like Ali's did later. Jerry was a human being and nobody goes through life
without making mistakes including you, I, and everyone here at this
site. Also, if you want me to be critical of a white fighter, Tommy
Morrison couldn't take a punch and he had a bad attitude too. He also doesn't
show much character as he cotracted AIDS by having a lot sexual partners,
probably, I assume female. His comment after beating Bobby Quarry was
insulting to the Quarry family. In his attempt at humor, he said, "the Quarrys
are tha kind of people who are insulted if you don't punch them in the face."
Morrison doesn't not seem to be a very nice person and he is probably not half
the person Ali is. I have never met Morrison though and I reserve the privledge
of changing my opinion about him if he isn't the way I see him.|
don't have to apologize or justify anything if ~you~ know you're OK. It's
something that's completely unworthy of comment, so let's get back to business
as usual. :-)|
Eastside Boxing, with some really entertaining quotes by various boxers. I'm not
sure if you have to be a member or not to view these, but membership is no
biggie; this is a good
heard a great quote from George Bush President - "Most of our imports come from
other countries". I like that one. Race plays a big part in boxing. A great
white fighter will always do better than a great black fighter (financially).
Your comments were spot on Kent. Koo Koo keeps us all entertained - lets leave
step back sometimes and just let Cheney run the country! LOL! Jerry Quarry
didn't realize that he was demonstrating his racism by vitrue of all the black
fighters (not many others in the heavier divisions) he beat the crap out of, or
