From the mineral resource point of view, the Madre de Dios basin
has particular economic interest due to the important indications of
hydrocarbon presence in arenaceous reservoirs of the Devonian and
Permian-Carboniferous, evident by means of three exploratory
drillings carried out in the Manuripi and Madre de Dios rivers.
Confirming other studies conducted in Peru, the recent research
conducted in Bolivia on the oil source rock (Moretti et al., 1994,
1995) is optimistical in terms of the hydrocarbon potential in the
area.
Stratigraphy
The Pando Plain and the adjacent regions are almost entirely
covered by recent sediments pertaining to the flood plains produced
by the annual overflow of the southwestern rivers. In the cuts of the
gorges scoured by the main rivers, such as the Acre River in the
Brazilian border, Neogene and Quaternary sediments, with fossil
vertebrate remanents, can be observed.
The Madre de Dios basin has a sedimentary record of a thickness
of more than 9,000 m, comprising rocks from the Paleozoic to the
Cenozoic (Carpenter, 1997).
Older sediments do not outcrop in this territory. Their presence is
known only from the cores and cuttings from the exploratory
drilling of the Pando and Manuripi wells, and from sesimic
information obtained in the area.
According to the information available to date, particularly from
the Occidental and Mobil companies (Solís & Sanders, 1991),
reports from the Center of Oil Technology Lab of YPFB, and the
work of Isaacson et al. (1995), it is possible to make the following
generalized stratigraphic relation:
Brazilian Cycle
There is no information available on the nature of the crystalline
basement’s rocks. The only available reference reports that the
Pando X-1 well reached a metamorphic basement made up by a
banded gneiss with garnet (Solís & Sanders, 1991), or garnet
bearing mylonitic quartzites (Isaacson et al., 1995). This basement
was found at a depth of 1981.27 m. These rocks would pertain to
the westbound extension of the Guaporé Craton.
