amigdaloides.
Nazareno basin, ages from 22 to 12 Ma were registered, while the
Tupiza-Estarca basins got activated aroung 17 Ma.
Coincidentally, the latest data show that the most important Andean
folding stage occured around 20 Ma (late Oligocene – Early
Miocene) (Hérail et al., 1994; Sempere et al., 1990). This action is
linked to the pacific plate motion.
Magmatism
Paleozoic
In the Eastern Cordillera of Bolivia, the magmatic activity that
occured during the Ordovician reflects a rifting of the continental
crust. The submarine volcanism interbeds with the sedimentary
marine sequence: During the Arenigian, in the southern part of the
country, kyneritic tuffs and dacitic flows interbed. During the
Llanvirnian, in the central part of the Eastern Cordillera, the
submarine basalt flows, and amigdaloid dolerites, equivalent and
mostly related to the Capinota Formation, interbed with one
another. During the Caradocian, basaltic andesite pillow lavas and
spitilized trachy-andesite interbed with the Amutara Formation in
the central and northern regions of the Eastern Cordillera (Avila
Salinas, 1996).
At the end of the Ordovician, the magmatic activity is related to the
Ocloyic Phase which, as indicated above, produced the intrusion of
plutons in Northern Argentina.
The main tectonic movement occured between the Upper Devonian
and the Lower Carboniferous, particularly during the latter. The
event pertains to the phase that YPFB geologists refer to as the
Chiriguana Phase, and which is widely studied by ORSTOM
geologists under the name of Eo-hercynic Phase. This is a mainly
compressive event which involved most of the Lower Paleozoic
rocks.
Mesozoic
During the Mesozoic, the most important magmatic event pertains
to the Kolla Phase Avila-Salinas (1989), which marks the boundary
between the Andean and Subandean cycles. It developed mainly
between the uppermost Triassic and the Middle Jurassic. This
magmatism presents two different phases: a first, compressive stage,
with plutonic intrusions in the northern area of the Eastern
Cordillera, and the other, distensive stage, in the central and
southern sector.
According to Avila (1981), the Cordillera Real core is occupied by
several granitic and granodioritic plutons (the Sorata, Huato, Yani,
Taquesi, and Huayna Potosí batholiths). The Upper Triassic age (in
the 210-200 Ma range) of the former has been established
(Evernden et al. , 1977; Grant et al., 1979; McBride, 1977,
unedited).
