Stratigraphic chart of Cordilleran Cycle units in the Chapare-Boomerang region.
presentan textura cuarcítica, bien compactas, algunas veces
No sediments of the Cordilleran Cycle outcrop in this area. Their
presence, extension, and thickness was established with the
development of exploratory perforation. Due to the depth of the
base, most of the wells did not go through the complete Cordilleran
sequence. Almost all of the perforations were limited to drilling
only as far as the oil objectives, such as the Sara Sandstone and the
reservoirs of the Roboré Formation.
In many of the Boomerang area wells, over the rocks of the
Brazilian basement, the presence of rocks of the Cancañiri
Formation (Koeberling, 1919) / Sacta (Chamot, 1963), has been
inferred. These sediments are present both as diamictite and
carbonatic facies (Ichoa, Sicurí-X1, Puquio-X1 wells, and others).
This sequence was also called “Pre-Silurian,” “Silurian-A,” and
“Pre-Sara.”
In most of the sector’s oil fields, exploratory perforation reached
the sandstones of El Carmen Formation (Oliveira & Leonardos,
1943). This unit takes on the name of the homonymous train station
in the Chiquitos Ranges. A complete relation of its features was
described during the development of the stratigraphy of the
Chiquitano area (p.116). The sequence described therein, continues
northwards up to the Chapare – Boomerang belt, where it was only
recognized in the subsurface. The sequence ellaborated on the basis
of cores, cuttings and electric logs allows to indicate the presence
of rhythmic interbedding of shale, siltstones, and sandstones. In
reservoris of interest, some arenaceous levels are formed, such as
the Sara sandstone (producer in this field). In general, these
arenaceous bodies have similar petro-physical features, presenting
whitish and grayish colors, coarse grain at the base and fine grain at
the top; they are well selected, subrounded, and have argillaceous
matrix, siliceous cement, quartzitic texture; they are very compact,
sometimes displaying microfractures filled with gray clay and/or
calcite, and have regular porosity. The Sara Sandstone registered
good gas readings, with C1 to C5 components, and whitish
