INTRODUCTION
Generalidades
El estudio de la Geología de Bolivia se inició el siglo pasado, y
continuó en el presente, con geólogos europeos de renombre como
Alcides d’Orbigny, Gustavo Steinmann, Román Kozlowski, y otros
muchos. A partir de los años treinta se incorporaron a la tarea de
interpretar y describir la geología del país los primeros geólogos
bolivianos, Jorge Muñoz Reyes, Raúl Canedo Reyes, Celso Reyes
y otros, que junto con investigadores de otros paises, como
Federico Ahlfeld y Leonardo Branisa, contribuyeron a la enseñanza
de las ciencias geológicas, y a la exploración en busca no solo del
conocimiento científico, sino también de recursos minerales y
energéticos. La creación de instituciones como Yacimientos
Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos, Corporación Minera de Bolivia y
la Departamento Nacional de Geología, así como la carrera de
Geología en las universidades de San Andrés (La Paz), Tomás
Frías (Potosí) y Técnica de Oruro, permitió formar en el país los
profesionales que actualmente contribuyen a ampliar el
conocimiento de la Geología de Bolivia.
La elaboración de hojas geológicas (1:100.000 y 1:250.000) de la
Carta Geológica de Bolivia fue realizada por el Servicio Geológico
de Bolivia durante los últimos 30 años. GEOBOL, desde 1996,
junto con otras instituciones, conforma el Servicio Nacional de
Geología y Minería (SERGEOMIN). Esta institución, con el
aporte de información geológica de YPFB y la colaboración
financiera del Banco Mundial, ha elaborado, luego de casi veinte
años, un nuevo Mapa Geológico de Bolivia a escala 1: 1.000.000,
que constituye una versión actualizada del publicado en 1968, y al
que se transfirió el resultado de la investigación y los
conocimientos logrados hasta la fecha por profesionales de las
instituciones involucradas y de otras entidades afines.
General Aspects
The study of the Geology of Bolivia started during the previous
century, and continued into the present with well-known European
geologists such as Alcides d’Orbigny, Gustavo Steinmann, Román
Kozlowski, and many other. Starting in the 30’s, the first Bolivian
geologists, Jorge Muñoz Reyes, Raúl Canedo Reyes, Celso Reyes,
and others, joined into the task of interpreting and describing the
geology of the country. Together with researchers from other
countries, such as Federico Ahlfeld and Leonardo Branisa, they
contributed to the teaching of geological sciences and to
exploration, not only in search for scientific knowledge, but also
for mineral and energy resources. The creation of institutions such
as Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), the
Bolivian Mining Corporation and the National Geology
Department, as well as the Geology Departments at the
Universities of San Andrés (La Paz), Tomás Frías (Potosí) and
Technical University of Oruro, made possible to train, in the
country, professionals who currently contribute to expanding the
knowledge on the Geology of Bolivia.
During the last 30 years, the Geological Survey of Bolivia
(GEOBOL) elaborated the geological sheets (1:100,000 and
1:250,000) of the Geological Chart of Bolivia. Since 1996,
GEOBOL, together with other institutions, make up the National
Geology and Mining Survey (SERGEOMIN). With YPFB´s
geological contributions and the financial aid of the World Bank,
after nearly twenty years, this institution has prepared a new
Geological Map of Bolivia, in a 1:1,000,000 scale. This map is an
updated version of the map published in 1968, to which the
research results and the knowledge obtained up to the date by
professionals of the involved institutions and other similar entities
were transferred.
