Proboscidina arcei y Scaphiocoelia boliviensis.
boliviensis, Australospirifer hawkinsi y Australocoelia palmata,
Pragiano-Emsiano. La asociación palinológica de Schizocystia
saharica / pilosa caracteriza a la formación.
and then located at the top of the arenacous member together with
Clarkeia antisiensis.
Over the previous formation overlays the Santa Rosa Formation
(Ahlfeld & Branisa, 1960), pertaining to a predominatly arenaceous
unit which was deposited in a shallow shelf marine environment,
with coastal and deltaic or fluvial influence. The high energy beach
environment is not fit for the development of a bentonian
community; thus, this unit is characterized, particularly at the two
lower thirds, by a marked absence of macrofossils. The microflora
recovered at the lab is neither abundant nor diverse, and is mostly
made up by chitinozoans, making possible to assign it a
Lochkovian age. This unit is settled over the Tarabuco Formation.
Due to the arenaceous nature of both units, it is difficult to locate
the boundary between them in some localities. In the few localities
in which the upper member of the Tarabuco Formation (Jumbate or
Chululuyoj) was preserved, the separation is defined. Lobo (1970)
established de Dictyotriletes sp. Zone as being representative of
this unit. However, Liachenko (in Limachi et al., 1996) proposes a
new name for this association: the Urochitina loboi / Sphaerochitina
densibaculata Zone, and adds Cingulochitina sp.,
Hoegisphaera sp. and Dictyotriletes sp. to this set, together with
the above-mentioned species. Racheboeuf et al. (1993) report that
they collected plant remanents and rare marine palynomorphs such
as Eisenachitina cf. bohemica, in these sediments. Towards the
upper levels, the Santa Rosa Formation pertains to an more
offshore environment, where it developed an abundant benthonic
community, composed mainly of Proboscidina arcei and
Scaphiocoelia boliviensis. At these levels, there are also other
brachipods and trilobites that are common to this unit as much as to
the overlying Icla Formation. This latter association is typical of
the basal Pragian, in which the largest Devonian transgression gets
started (Racheboeuf et al. , 1993).
Continuously and transitionally over the sandstones of the Santa
Rosa Formation, there is a sequence of finer sediments: very
fossiliferous siltstones, shale, and fine grained sandstones, which
were called Icla Shale by Ulrich (1892). This sequence represents
the basin’s deepening at the base, and the shelf gradually
becoming shallower towards the top. The sediments contain
abundant marine invertebrate fauna, standing out among them the
Scaphiocoelia boliviensis, Australospirifer hawkinsi and
Australocoelia palmata , associated to a variety of trilobite,
mollusk, echinoderm forms, and other fossil groups, indicating an
age close to the Pragian-Emsian limit. The palynological
association of Schizocystia saharica / pilosa is typical of this
formation.
Emsiano.
Increasing rapidly in thickness and grain size of the sandstone
banks, a new sequence starts, displaying greater coastal and deltaic
influence. This formation was also defined by Ulrich (1892) and
called “Huamampampa Sandstones.” The most representative
marine invertebrate association is made up by Viaphacops
orurensis, Wolfartaspis cornutus, Conularia quichua and Emsian
palynomorphs of the Evittia sommeri and Emphanisporites
annulatus zone.
