COMPENDIO DE GEOLOGIA DE BOLIVIA
bancos conglomerádicos polimícticos con clastos de rocas
paleozoicas.
decir Oligoceno superior-Mioceno inferior.
Corresponden a
coladas de lava porfídica, melanocrática de textura amigdaloide.
Algunas edades radimétricas obtenidas proporcionan edades entre
25,2 y 15,8 Ma (Mioceno inferior a medio).
with Paleozoic rock clasts.
In the Altiplano’s southern region outcrops the Potoco Formation
(Pérez, 1963). This unit will be described in more detail during the
discussion of the geology of the South Altiplano, where it outcrops
extensively. In the Central Altiplano, it is covered unconformingly
by the Tambillo Formation, which will be discussed in the
following cycle.
Andean II Cycle
Starting during the Upper Oligocene, this cycle’s rocks were
deposited in a backarc and foreland basin of the Eastern Cordillera.
In the Azurita-Cuprita area, over the sediments of the Turco
Formation from the preceding cycle, overlie the conglomerates of
Azurita Formation (Ahlfeld, 1946). This formation is made up by
alluvial and fluvial conglomerates with sandstone interbedding.
The conglomerates contain well rounded boulders of granitic
Proterozoic rocks, pegmatites and gneisses. A reddish gneiss
boulder from this formation gave an absolute age of 647 Ma.
Superimposed over the Azurita Formation are the reddish and
greenish, partially conglomeradic sandstones of the Huayllapucara
Formation (Geobol, 1965), of the Middle Miocene, representing
sequences deposited in the same alluvial and fluvial plain
as the preceding unit. The datings on this unit are 13.5 and 15 Ma.
In the Curahuara de Carangas area, the Totora Formation (Meyer
& Murillo, 1961) lie in unconformity over the Huayllamarca
Formation of the preceding cycle. This unit is a volcanoclastic
sequence made up by reddish clays, argillaceous sandstones, and
shale with a large amount of volcanic tuff interbedding.
Cupriferous sandstones with plant and carbonized or silicified
wood are common. The age of this formation is equal to that of the
Coniri, Azurita and Tambillo formations, that is, Upper Oligocene-
Lower Miocene.
In the Tambo-Tambillo area, as a later event than the unconformity
of the Upper Oligocene, the lavas of the Tambillo Formation
(Pérez, 1963) settle over the Potoco Formation. These lavas were
deposited in an intra-arc and backarc basin. They pertain to
melanocratic, amygdaloid-textured, porphyric lava boulders. Some
of the radiometric ages obtained give ages between 25.2 and 15.8
Ma (Lower to Middle Miocene).
Locally displaying tuffaceous lenses, the conglomerates of the
Pomata and Crucero formations, both of which have already been
described when discussing the northern sector, settle in unconformity
over the different Lower and Middle Miocene units.
During the Upper Miocene and Lower Pliocene, the Umala
Formation (Meyer & Murillo, 1961) deposited over the abovementioned
formations. This unit starts with “Tuff-76” (dated at 5.2
Ma), continuing with fine grained sandstones, clays and tuffs with
volcanic ash banks and conglomerate interbedding.
