OROGENO ANDINO Conceptos generales La metalogenia del oeste de Bolivia, norte de Chile, noroeste de Argentina y centro y sud de Perú, áreas particularmente mineralizadas de la muy extensa Provincia Polimetálica Andina, se inscribe más específicamente en el marco de la evolución geodinámica fanerozoica de los actuales Andes Centrales, tramo cordillerano que se alarga desde el norte de Lima hasta el paralelo de Tucumán entre las latitudes 11° y 27° S aproximadamente. Esta parte de la cadena andina se caracteriza por la sucesión de oeste a este de arcos magmáticos subparalelos y, en relación con ellos, de fajas metalogénicas longitudinales amplias (extendiéndose hasta más de 600 km de la fosa actual de subducción, en lugar de los 40 km alcanzados a lo sumo en los arcos normales [Coira et al. 1982]), ordenadas según una conspicua zonación transversal: Cu-(Mo-Au) ? Zn-Pb-Ag-Cu-Au ? Sn-(Ag-W) ? Au-Sb/Pb-Zn, y apenas disturbadas en general por una segmentación longitudinal en subprovincias metálicas limitadas por megaestructuras tectónicas más o menos perpendiculares al orógeno (Sillitoe 1976) (fig. 9.3). Además, se sabe que las porciones central y meridional (16°-27° S) de los Andes Centrales, donde tuvo lugar, hacia el oeste, un magmatismo casi continuo desde el Mioceno hasta el Reciente y donde el volcanismo sigue todavía activo a lo largo del Arco Principal de la Cordillera Occidental, del Altiplano occidental y de la Puna ("Zona Volcánica Central" de los Andes), se singularizan por dos distintivos adicionales de gran significado metalogénico: ?? una inclinación apreciable (20°-30°) del plano de Benioff subyacente, con relación a aquella de sólo 5°-15° que tipifica los segmentos andinos colindantes al norte y al sur, y ?? un espesor considerable (hasta 70 km) del substrato cortical continental (Redwood 1987, Thorpe et al. 1982). marks the Precambrian-Phanerozoic transition in the craton of western Bolivia. ANDEAN OROGEN General Concepts The metallogeny if western Bolivia, northern Chile, northwestern Argentina, and central and southern Peru, areas that are particularly mineralized in the very extensive Andean Polymetallic Province, can be more specifically registered within the Phanerozoic geodynamic evolution framework of the current Central Andes, a range stretch that covers from the north of Lima to the Tucumán parallel between the 11° and 27° S latitudes, aproximately. This part of the Andean chain features, from west to east, the succession of subparallel magmatic arcs and, related there to, of wide lengthwise metallogenic belts (spanning over more than 600 km of the current subduction trench, instead of the 40 km reached, at the most, in normal arcs [Coira et al. 1982]), arranged according to a conspicuous broadside zoning: Cu-(Mo-Au) ? Zn-Pb-Ag-Cu-Au ? Sn-(Ag-W) ? Au-Sb/Pb- Zn, and in general barely disturbed by the lengthwise segmentation in metallic provinces limited by tectonic megastructures more or less perpendicular to the orogen (Sillitoe 1976) (fig. 9.3). Besides, it is well known that the central and meridional sectors (16°-27° S) in the Central Andes, where, to the west, an almost continuous magmatism took place from the Miocene to the Recent, and where the volcanism continues to be active along the Western Cordillera’s Main Arc, the western Altiplano, and the Puna (“Central Volcanic Zone” of the Andes), are unique because of two additional features of great metallogenic meaning: ?? a noticeable slope (20°-30°) of the Benioff plane, as compared to the 5°-15° slope which is typical of the adjacent Andean segments to the north and south, and ?? a considerable thickness (up to 70 km) of the continental crustal bedrock (Redwood 1987, Thorpe et al. 1982). 176
