conglomerádicas, gradando a areniscas finas y arcillitas.
sedimentos corresponden a depósitos continentales, fluviales y
lacustres.
the stratigraphic nomenclature of Peru. Later on, with the purpose
of establishing type localities in the country, Barrios (1989)
proposed new names and localities for the Jurassic-Cretaceous
sequence northeast of Lake Titicaca.
Over the area’s Paleozoic sediments, the Puerto Acosta Formation
(Barrios, 1989) lies in unconformity. This unit was deposited in a
back-arc basin which starts the Andean Cycle in the northern sector
of the Eastern Cordillera. It represents a shallow shelf marine
deposit, with coastal and deltaic influence. According to the author
it was named after, two sequences can be defined: the lower one
features an important slip level, overlain by claystones and shale,
and interbedding of shale with thin limestone and sandstone levels
on top. The second sequence is made up by upward coarsening
sandstones at the base, and downward coarsening at the top.
The Pacobamba Formation (Barrios, 1989) follows in conformity,
having been deposited under a braided river fluvial regime, with a
preferential SW-NE trend. The sequences are downward coarsening;
at the base, they are partially conglomeradic, gradually
changing to fine sandstones and claystones. This formation would
be equivalent to the Condo, La Puerta and Sucre formation is the
south-central sector.
The Carabuco Formation (Barrios, 1989) follows, which was also
deposited in a fluvial plain close to the coast. The author defined
two sequences: the lower sequence is upward coarsening and
downward fining, and the second one has decreasing relations.
This unit is equivalent to the Tarapaya Formation in the south and
central sector.
A thin marine carbonatic horizon approximately 20 m thick, lays
on top. It is called the Matilde Formation (Barrios, 1989), and
pertains to limestones and shallow shelf marine dolomites, in
which the coastal influence is evident. It is equivalent to the
Miraflores Formation in the south, and the Ayavacas Limestones in
the southern part of Peru. The paleontological content and the
correlations with the Miraflores Formation make it possible to
assign it a Cenomanian age.
Another thin unit continues, with a thickness of 35 m and made up
by sandstones and gypsum. This sequence was called Ancoraimes
Formation (Barrios, 1989). The sediments pertain to continental,
fluvial and lacustrine deposits. According to the author of this
name, the presence of abundant gypsum levels in the sequence
indicates the ending of a deposition cycle. It is equivalent to the
Aroifilla Formation in the south of the country.
A new shallow shelf marine sediment was deposited in the northern
sector. It is represented by a succession of over 200 m of shale an
varicolored clays, interbedded by calcareous sandstones and
limestones, called Huarachani Formation (Barrios, 1989). This
formation is equivalent to the Chaunaca Formation (and El
Molino?) of the southern Eastern Cordillera.
The Ococoya Formation (Rivas, 1968) follows, having been
deposited in a transitional deltaic and coastal environment, with
marine influence. It is made up by variegated silicified shale, with
