ambiente costero a deltaico.
No
abundancia Australospirifer hawkinsi y Australocoelia palmata.
Gradationally, arenaceous interbedding is more frequent towards
the top. The Catavi Formation (Koeberling, 1919) starts with the
first important sandstone bank, generally carrier of the Clarkeia
antisiensis brachiopod. This formation was deposited during the
upper Silurian (Pridolian) in a shallow shelf with coastal influence.
As indicated above, present in this unit is Clarkeia, a guide fossil
of the association also made up by species of the Heterorthella and
Harringtonina genera, among the most important. Other diagnostic
genera in this unit include the Kazachstania and Andinacaste. In
Huacani-Condo, the Catavi Formation presents the Pterochitina
pterivelata and Urochitina urna palinological association
(Liachenko in Limachi et al., 1996). This unit is equivalent to the
Tarabuco Formation of the eastern sector.
In the western sector, over the entire border of the Cordillera Real
(Yani – Huayna Potosí), the cordilleran rocks were subjected to a
dynamothermal metamorphic process, producing a metamorphic
aureole. This metamorphism affected the sediments of the Catavi,
Uncía and Cancañiri formations, and even the Ordovician rocks in
the region: the Coroico and Amutara formations (Pérez-Guarachi,
1980). This set of rocks altered by metamorphism was called
“Cordillera Real Slates” by Kozlowski (1923).
In some localities, the Catavi Formation ends with a pellitic
horizon called Ventilla by Koeberling (1919). This level is
attributed to the base of the Devonian. However, the absence of this
horizon is most frequent, and the sequence continues transitionally
with the Vila Vila Formation (Fricke et al., 1964). This formation
is made up by crossbedded sandstones from a coastal to deltaic
environment. Due to its proximity to the coast, the presence of
fossil invertebrate remanents is reduced. Nonetheless,
Proboscidina arcei, Sanjuanetes dalenzae and Australocoelia
intermedia, which are endemic Malvinokaffric fossils
corresponding to the base of the Devonian, were collected
particularly in the upper levels of this unit. Attributed to the Rhynia
genus, the presence of plant fragments from primitive vascular
plants is frequent.
Continuing are infratidal sediments of relative greater depth, and
therefore, with a greater fossiliferous content than the preceding
one. This deposit occured in a shallow to deep shelf marine
environment which is typical of most of the Cordilleran Cycle.
These rocks pertain to the Belén Formation (Fricke et al., 1964), a
unit that together with the overlying Sicasica Formation, serves as
reference for the study of Malvinokaffric invertebrate fauna. The
Condoriquiña Quartzite splits the Belén Formation into two
members, and ends with the Cruz Loma Quartzite at the base of the
Sicasica Formation. The upper member of the Belén Formation has
greater coastal and deltaic influence, a fact that reflects the nature
of the present fossil fauna. The lower biozone features the presence
of Scaphiocoelia boliviensis. The upper, in turn, features the
biozone associated to Conularia quichua, in which Australospirifer
hawkinsi and Australocoelia palmata stand out for their abundance.
The sequence of the Sicasica Formation (Kozlowski, 1923),
continues normally with the Cruz Loma Quartzite at the base,
which separates it from the previous formation. This unit’s
