margas varicoloreadas. Los niveles de lutitas negras son de
bastante espesor (80-120 m), y generalmente presentan fuerte olor
which generates gravitational flows near the relieves and modifies
the basin’s geometry.
The argillaceous levels of the Kaka Formation are carriers of the
Nothorhacopteris kellaybelenensis paleoflora, which is identical to
that present at the Siripaca Formation in Titicaca Lake. Studies on
these same rocks, performed by Azcuy & Ottone (1987), identified
continental origin polens and spores, assigned to the Lower
Carboniferous.
Subandean Cycle
The Paleozoic sequence ends with the deposit of carbonatic marine
sediment on a shallow shelf with coastal influence, and in a
backarc basin, corresponding to the Copacabana Formation
(Cabrera-La Rosa & Petersen, 1936). According to Oller (1984),
this unit is mostly calcareous, with limestones, calcareous
sandstones, and interbedding of shale, clays and marls of a variety
of colors. The black shale levels are quite thick (80-120 m ), and
generally feature a strong hydrocarbon smell when broken
(bituminous shale).
The age of the formation (documented by conodonts and fusulines
is attributed to the basal Bashkirian interval (Rhachistognathus
muricatus area) through the Kungurian (zona de Neostreptognathodus
pequopensis area), that is, from the base of the Upper
Carboniferous to the Lower Permian (Merino & Blanco, 1990).
This age is also reflected by the content of brachiopods (mainly
productids), fusulines, bryozoans, and other fossil groups of the
Neospirifer condor biozone. The palynology is defined by the
Lueckisporites biozone. The geochemical study of this unit’s
pellitic samples in the Tacuaral well indicates that they belong to
type I-II, which is favorable for the generation of hydrocarbons
The sandstones of the Bopi Formation (Oller ,1984) overlie in a
conforming stratigraphic relation. They were deposited in a deltaic
and coastal transitional environment, with aeolian and fluvial
influence, and in a backarc basin. According to Oller (1986), at the
base, these sediments are made up by fine grained sandstones, with
crossbedding and ripples, and interbedded by thin shale levels and
