grano medio y conglomerados finos.
Plaxhoplous sp., Glossotherium sp., Macrauchenia cf. ullomensis, y
Servant-Vildary & Blanco (1984).
Over Member 6 of the Mauri Formation lie uncinformingly the
Upper Pliocene ignimbrites of the Pérez Formation (Sirvas, 1964,
Sirvas & Torres, 1966). This name was given to a 20 to 200 m
thick succession which starts a volcanic breccia, followed by
rhyolitic flow tuffs (one of these layers contains fossil trunks). The
sequence ends with a 20 m thick yellowish brown ingnimbritic
layer. Regionally, this unit rests on rocks of different ages. The
radiometric datins carried out on these rocks give ages between 2.2
y 3.3 Ma (Evernden et al., 1977; Lavenu et al., 1989). In the
central Altiplano, the Pérez ingnimbrite lies over the Umala
Formation.
The Altiplano’s western region, next to the Chilean border, is
covered by sediments, belonging to the Charaña Formation, that
deposited in a fluvial and lacustrine plain (Sirvas, 1964). Making
up this unit are a coarse grained tuff mantle, medium grained
tuffaceous sandstones, and fine conglomerates. All the
aforementioned is covered by a powerful sandy limestone layer
(Núñez, 1964). Filled in a backarc basin, these sediments have a
marked volcanic influence resulting from the surrrounding igneous
activity. The regions near the lagoons were inhabited by one of the
oldest Pleistocene vertebrate groups in the Altiplano, equivalent to
those of Ayo ayo and Purapurani. This last unit’s sediments were
dated at 1.6 Ma (Lavenu et al., 1989). The fauna includes
Plaxhoplous sp., Glossotherium sp., Macrauchenia cf. ullomensis,
and an undetermined Cervidae (Marshall et al., 1992). Diatoms,
known from the work if Servant-Vildary & Blanco (1984),
developed in the waters of the lagoons.
In the Altiplano’s central sector, Proterozoic rocks have been
recognized only at the western volcanic belt (see further ahead),
where the Altiplano’s oldest rocks have been described (gneisses
and charnokites from Cerro Uyarani between entre 1859 ± 200
Ma and 2024 ± 133 Ma) Troeng et al., 1994; Wörner, 1999 in
press.
Tacsariano Cycle
The Ordovician sequence reached during the perforation of the
exploratory wells in the North Altiplano (Santa Lucía and Toledo)
is inferred to extend towards the Central Altiplano.
Ciclo Cordillerano
Altiplano.
Cordillerano Cycle
Greatly distributed within the Eastern Cordillera, the Cordilleran
Cycle rocks have very few outcrops in the Altiplano.
Sediments from the Upper Silurian Catavi Formation outcrop in
small isolated hills to the east of Andamarca. Approximately 20 m
of interbedded greenish gray sandstones with fissil black shale
levels can be observed.
