(Oliveira & Leonardos, 1943), unidad predominantemente arenosa
Heterorthella tacopayana Recientemente Edgecombe & Fortey
nuevos géneros y cuatro nuevas especies: Awaria struvei n. gen., n.
sp. y Festia energetica n. gen., n. sp., Andinacaste ramiroi n. sp. y
unidad corresponden a Harringtonina acutiplicata y Tentaculites
The sequence starts with the deposit of the El Carmen Formation
(Oliveira & Leonardos, 1943). This unit is mainly arenaceous, with
numerous conglomerate interbedding and scarce thin pellitic rock
levels. The sandstones are sacaroidal, with medium to very coarse
grain, and are well bedded, presenting crossbedded lamination. This
formation contains a well bedded hematitic horizon, with a thickness
ranging between 3 and 37 m (López-Paulsen et al., 1982). Two
fossiliferous horizons were recognized by the preceding authors: the
lower with the Phragmolites suarezi, and the upper level with the
Clarkeia antisiensis / Heterorthella tacopayana associations.
Recently, Edgecombe & Fortey (2000) studied the trilobites of this
formation and identified two new genera and four new species, which
are: Awaria struvei n. gen., n. sp., Festia energetica n. gen., n. sp.,
Andinacaste ramiroi n. sp. and Australocaste oconnori n. sp. This list
is completed by Trimerus linares, Dalmanites sp., Kettneraspis sp.,
and a member of the Maurotarian dereimsi group. Other species in
this unit correspond to Harrigtonina acutiplicata and Tentaculites sp.
This fauna association is diagnostic of the Pridolian (Upper Silurian);
however, its extending into the lowermost Lochkovian cannot be
dismissed. This association allows to make a close correlation with
the Catavi and Tarabuco formations of the Eastern Cordillera. A
Ludlowian age was assigned to these horizons by palynology.
Without a well defined limit, the Roboré Formation (Ahlfeld &
Branisa, 1960) continues over the El Carmen Formation. It makes
up an eminently arenaceous unit, with very few conglomeradic
levels. The thickness in this formation ranges between 80 and 120
m, and its area distribution is more restricted than in the El Carmen
Formation. Two coquine levels were found in these rocks, with
brachiopods and other fossil groups belonging to the Proboscidina
arcei biozone (Suárez-Riglos, 1982; López-Paulsen et al., op.cit.).
This fauna allows the correlation of the Roboré Formation with the
Vila Vila and Santa Rosa formations of the Andean sector.
The Cordilleran Cycle sequence ends with the deposit of
predominantly pellitic sediments of the Limoncito Formation
(Ahlfeld & Branisa, 1960). The lower portion correspondsto an
interbedding of fine grained sandstones and black shale; the upper
portion is made up exclusively by black shale (López-Paulsen op.
cit.). Several fossiliferous horizons have been recognized in this
unit. The Scaphiocoelia boliviensis association is present in the
lower levels, and the middle and upper levels contain ostracodes,
pelecipods, fossil plants and echinoderms. In these sediments, Pinto
& Purper (1981) identified two new ostracode species. YPFB’s
palynological determinations (Aguilar, 1982; Lobo, 1982) assigned
a wide age range to these sediments (Emsian to Eifelian). This fact
would allow the correlation of these rocks to the Icla,
Huamampampa and Los Monos formations, of the Sub Andean
region. In other sectors, particularly in the Boomerang area, the
Iquiri Formation lies over the Limoncito Formation. This fact
would confirm the age assigned to these sediments.
