madre, reservorios, sellos regionales y locales.
The global process refers to a progressive approach of the Brazilian
Shield and the North Altiplano Massif. Therefore, the compression
at the basins is more or less continuous, occuring since the
Paleocene – Eocene (probably as early as during the Cretaceous).
Up north, this approach is diagonal to the Andes’ strike; this
implies a strong reverse sinistral component in the Eastern
Cordillera (Real) and in the north of the Altiplano.
To the south, the shortening trend is almost perpendicular to the
structures’ trend. Inverted faults and imbricate blocks prevail. In
the Brazilian Shield’s continental subduction zone –which passes
by the surroundings of Sucre-, it forms a cortical-scale overthrust
towards the east, which can be compared to the overthrust of the
North Altiplano Massif. The crosscutting faults, located between
the large blocks, guide the deformation (Sevaruyo-Incapuquio
Fault, FSI, for instance). (Cl. Martínez, personal communication)
According to Araníbar et al., (1995) it is impossible to map the
basement in detail due to the acquired seismic resolution.
Anticlines with roll overs in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are very
frequent, such as the Vilque, Garci Mendoza’s Salinas, and San
Andrés structures and others. Inverted anticlines in the Upper
Oligocene constitute structural traps, which, according to their
structural realm (Araníbar & Martínez, 1990), can constitute oil
bearing traps of great interest, with the presence of parent rock,
reservoirs, regional and local seals. Other type of complex traps are
also common, such as anticlines by old faulting systems
transpressure, which were affected by inversion and diapirism (for
instance: the Wara Sara Dome in the North Altiplano).
According to Araníbar & Martínez (unpublished document), the
Bolivian Altiplano can be divided in the northern, central and
southern tectonic realms, each with its own tectonic style and
distinctive stratigraphis evolution. West of the Coniri Fault, the
Corocoro sector is characterized by a thick sequence of Tertiary
continental deposits and compressive structures involving the
crystalline basement and with west vergence.
The NNW stroke of the Tambillo Fault subdivides the central
Altiplano realm in the Coipasa and Sevaruyo areas. To the west,
the Coipasa area was affected by the basement’s WNW sinistral
trend fault; however, the thick development of Tertiary clastics is
lacking. To the east, the Sevaruyo area features a thick Cretaceous
sequence, affected by the overthrust of thin east and west trend
plumes.
The southern Altiplano realm features a major change in the
structural stroke from the northwest to the northeast. Two sectors
are separated by the NE trend Uyuni-Keniani Fault. To the west,
the Uyuni Salina sector displays dextral transpressure structures,
including positive flower and echelon structures. To the east, the
Lípez sector is dominated by a overthrust of thin plumes; however,
in contrast to the Sevaruyo area, this sector contains a Cretaceous
section less than 200 m thick.
