formaciones Tupambi, Itacuamí-Tarija, Chorro y Taiguati.
and located approximately at the arenaceous increase. Very few
macrofossils were found in this formation, the most common being
the Tropidoleptus carinatus. On the contrary, the palynological
content is diagnostic and abundant. The lower part features the
Verrucosisporites premnus association, and the upper part, the
Maranhites brasiliensis Zone, palynomorphs which characterize
the Givetian–Frasnian; however, in some sectors, these rocks’
deposit even reached the Famennian (Retispora lepidophyta Zone).
The Cordilleran Cycle ends during the Famennian-Visean with the
Saipurú Formation (Suárez-Soruco & López-Pugliessi, 1983).
This unit raises debates on its stratigraphic relation. The topic calls
for a more detailed and thorough analysis, thus, this paper will not
deal with it. The Saipurú Formation corresponds to a syntectonic
deposit (Chiriguano movements) in a shallow shelf marine environment
with glacimarine influence. This unit is made up by an
alternation of massive sand banks, diamictites, and clays, all of
them with evidence of slipping and re-sedimentation. The
palynological remanents found in its sediments allowed the
differentiation of three biozones: at the base, the upper-most
Famennian Retispora lepidophyta association; then, the Tournaisian
Verrucosisporites magloirei Zone; and at the upper part, the
Visean Verrucosisporites magnidictyus Zone (Lobo, personal
comm.). The conglomerates and sandstones of the Tupambi
Formation are settled in unconformity over the Saipurú Formation.
The boundary between the Cordilleran and Subandean cycles
pertains to a tectonic phase. At YPFB, these movements were
called the Chiriguana Phase (Eohercynic in the ORSTOM works).
Subandean Cycle
The marine and continental transitional sediments of this cycle
have been gathered in three groups: Macharetí, Mandiyutí and
Cuevo. In terms of time, it starts in the Namurian (Tupambi) and
ends in the Lower Jurassic (San Diego). Making up the base of the
Tacurú Group and the beginning of the Andean Cycle, the Entre
Ríos Basalt marks the cycle’s upper limit.
Deposited in a foreland basin, the Macharetí basal turbiditic groupcomplex
is made up by a submarine canal grid which cut and
intertwine with each other, following a general SE-NW slope and
filling a Subandean basin with detritus coming from both, the
western hercynic range and the Guaporé Craton. The sedimentary
sequence is made up by cyclic events of conglomerates-sands and
clay-diamictite, which from base to top, they were differentiated as
the Tupambi, Itacuamí-Tarija, Chorro and Taiguati formations.
During the deposit of the Mandiyutí group, made up by the
Escarpment and San Telmo formations, the environmental conditions
were maintained. Large submarine canals cross the
Subandean basin, maintaining the olf Macharetí canals, or opening
up new ways with the energy of new and thick detrital flows.
