of two well defined calcareous bodies of different ages, one
belonging to the Tucavaca Group (Pororó Formation), and the
younger, belonging to the Murciélago Formation.
According to the authors that named it, the Murciélago Formation
starts with a thin siltstones layer, followed by whitish gray
feldspathic sandstones, and limestones. According to Aguilera
(1994), the latter can be classified as reef and non-reef limestones.
The reef limestoneswere deposited in a sea shelf, with limestones,
dolomites and presence of oncolitic and stromatolitic structure
algae. The non-reef limestones, from the basin’s border, are made
up by calcite, clastics, beach oolites, dolomite and anhydrite.
These rocks provided fossil remanents in Brazilian territory
(Corumbá Group), stromatolitic algae as Aulophicus lucianoi and
Collenia, and the scyphozoan invertebrates identified as
Corumbella werneri. This fossiliferous association is attributed to
the Lower Cambrian.
Cordilleran Cycle
Although Ordovician rocks have been previously quoted as present
in the region, according to the latest information, such rocks would
be absent in the area. Over the Brazilian Cycle sediments, the
Silurian-Devonian sequences of the Cordilleran Cycle deposited
directly. These rocks are related to the faulting along the Tucavaca
Belt. Barbosa (1949) defined his “Santiago Series” by grouping
the El Carmen, Limoncito and La Torre formations into it. Ahlfeld
& Branisa (1960) modified the series, replacing the name of the
upper unit (La Torre Formation) with Limoncito Formation, and
assigning Barbosa’s Limoncito Formation the name of Roboré
Formation. The reasons that led Ahlfeld & Branisa to make these
changes are unknown. The subsequent usage validated the change,
and the only later modification was to replace the term “Series”
with Santiago group. These changes are shown in the following
figure. López-Paulsen et al. (1982) proposed to restrict the name of
Santiago Group to the Devonian Roboré and Limoncito
Formations.
Stratigraphic equivalences of the Santiago Group (Cordilleran Cycle).
marcada influencia costera y deltaica.
Llandoveriano ? (Formación El Carmen) y concluye en el
Frasniano (Formación Iquiri).
In the Chiquitos Ranges, the Cordilleran Cycle rocks represent the
deposit of a shallow shelf sea sequence on the stable border of a
foreland basin. The lower formations, El Carmen and Roboré, also
reflect a marked coastal and deltaic influence. In this sector of the
basin, the Cordilleran sequences have common faunas as those in
the Andean Basin and the Paraná Basin. The cycle starts in the
Llandovernian ? (El Carmen Formation) and ends in the Frasnian
(Iquiri Formation).
