With great development in the Eastern Cordillera, the Copacabana
Formation (Upper Carboniferous-Lower Permian) extends into the
Subandean in the Santa Cruz area (El Tunal region).
During the Permian, the basin shifts from a marine to a transitional
and continental nature. Fluvial, aeolian, carbonatic and evaporitic
sediments of the Cuevo group, made up by the Cangapi, Vitiacua,
Ipaguazu and San Diego formations, were deposited.
Following, a summarized description of the particular features of
each one of the formations making up the meridional Subandean is
provided.
Stratigraphic chart of Macharetí and Mandiyutí groups (Upper Carboniferous – Permian)
superior. Consiguientemente, estos sedimentos se asignaron al
Namuriano y Westfaliano. Sin embargo, en base a reconstrucciones
paleogeográficas y correlaciones estratigráficas, algunos trabajos
The Macharetí Group (Harrington, 1922) is laid out in
unconformity over the different Devonian and Lower Carboniferous
formations. From base to top, this unit groups the Tupambi,
Itacuamí/Tarija, Chorro formations and ends with the Taiguati
Formation. Initiated in the Namurian, this set ends apparently in
the Westfalian.
The sequence starts with the Tupambi Formation (White, 1924).
It is made up by sandstones and conglomerates, interbedded by
gray diamictites that form coarse irregular banks with occasional
subordinate shale interbedding. This sequence pertains to a shallow
shelf marine environment, with deltaic influence and evidence of
re-sedimentation.
Just like that of the Cordilleran Cycle, this sequence was deposited
in a foreland basin. The scarce paleontological information
available prevents having an exact idea of the unit’s age. YPFB
palynological determninations (Lobo, personal comm.) assigned a
Upper Namurian age to these rocks. Azcuy & Laffite (1981)
recognized two palynological associations (A and B); the lower
with Ancistrospora verrucosa, and the upper one with
Potonieisporites sp., assigning a Middle to Upper Carboniferous
age to them. Consequently, these sediments were assigned to the
Namurian to Westfalian. However, based on paleogeographical
reconstructions and stratigraphic correlations, some recent works
