Ciclo Andino I
(Schlagintweit, 1941). Esta unidad está constituida por calizas con
intercalaciones arenosas y pelíticas. Estas rocas son muy
fosilíferas, con numerosas especies de ammonites, pelecípodos,
gastrópodos, equinodermos y otros. Esta secuencia se desarrolla en
el borde oriental del Altiplano central.
Devonian sediments outcrop at the anticline cores of Andamarca
and San Pedro de Huaylloco. Stratigraphic information on the Vila
Vila, Belén and Sica Sica formations, present in the region, is
contained in several unedited YPFB reports (Hochstatter, 1971;
Cadima, 1972; Oller, 1974 and Jarandilla, 1988).
At Andamarca, 90 m of quartzitic sandstones from the Vila Vila
Formation outcrop at the Titapura anticline core. Australospirifer
hawkinsi is present at this unit’s upper levels.
Above the aforementioned, 170 m of shale abd silt from the Belén
Formation develop with abundant fauna consisting mainly of
Palaeoneilo cf. P. elliptica, Nuculites cf. N. pacatus and Chonetes
sp.
Finally, the Cordillerano Cycle sequence ends with 70 m of
argillaceous and micaceous sandstones from the Sica Sica
Formation, which are sheared by the Cretaceous unconformity.
Some fossil levels with Pustulatia pustulosa, Ambocoelia
pseudoumbonata and other brachiopods were recovered from these
rocks.
Underneath the Cenozoic-Cretaceous cover of 2140 m, at the
Colchani well, Silurian-Devonian shales were drilled.
There are no Subandean Cycle sediments in the region.
Andean I Cycle
The best rock outcrops deposited during this cycle are located
within the realm of the Eastern Cordillera. A more complete
description of these sediments can be found in the description of
this geologic unit.
During the Cretaceous, the sedimentation at the Altiplano takes
place in a backarc basin. It starts with the Tarapaya-Orinoca formations.
During the Cenomanian, there is a short sea entry by the
Miraflores Formation. It continues with the Aroifilla, Chaunaca
and Coroma Formations. The Cretaceous sedimentation ends
during the Maastrichtian with the El Molino Formation. Likely, this
last carbonatic sequence enters the Paleocene in some of the
basin’s sectors.
The Tarapaya (Lohmann & Branisa, 1962) and the Orinoca
(Pérez, 1963) formations deposited in a meandering river and flood
plains fluvial environment, and are made up by pinkish yellow
sandstones, changing, as they move upwards, to argillaceous silts
with sporadic sandstone levels.
Starting at the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian), the first sea entry
occurs, depositing the rocks of Miraflores Formation on a shallow
carbonatic shelf (Schlagintweit, 1941). This unit is made up by
limestones with arenaceous and pelitic interbedding. These rocks
are very fossilipherous and contain a number of species such as:
ammonites, pelecipods, gastropods, echinoderms and others. This
sequence unfolds on the eastern border of the Central Altiplano.
