subandino meridional (Oligoceno superior?–Plioceno).
sequence of the Tacurú Group ends with this unit. In the central
sector of Subandean Belt, on the other hand, it marks the beginning
of this stage of sedimentation. Contrary to the southern sector, the
Ichoa Formation settles in unconformity over Silurian, Devonian,
Carboniferous, and Permian-Triassic rocks, north of Río Grande
and up to the latitude of Chapare. This unit has been traditionally
considered of Upper Cretaceous age; however, by correlation with
Jurassic aeolian events in Brazil, there is a current trend to consider
it as old as Brasil (Oller & Sempere, 1990).
The Yantata Formation (Chamot & Perry, 1962) lies in
unconformity over the Ichoa Formation. This unit is made up by
yellowish and reddish sandstones, which contrary to the sands of
the Ichoa Formation, do not display crossbedding structures. Just
like the rocks of the lower formation, the sediments of the Yantata
Formation are not fossiliferous.
It would be questionable to define the Cajones Formation (Heald
& Mather, 1922) as a marine unit with continental influence, or a
continental unit with marine influence. There are several arguments
in favor or against one or the other. This Memoir will consider the
latter as correct. However, a position of transitional deltaic and
coastal environment could be applied to this case. The Cajones
Formation represents the proximal facies (with calcareous sandstones
and paleosols) of the El Molino Formation in the Eastern
Cordillera. This sequence is made up by calcareous sandstones,
clays and limestones of nodular appearance. In some of the fields
located in the Santa Cruz area, the calcarenite levels in this formation
are hydrocarbon producers. This unit contains Gasteroclupea
branisai and Pucapristis branisi fossils, which enable correlations
to be carried out. The age assigned to the Cajones limestones is
Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous). The first dinosaur bones (cf.
Laplatasaurus sp. thigh bone, and unidentified taxon humerus)
were collected at this formation’s sandstones at the Espejos range
(Gutiérrez & Marshall, 1994).
Andean II Cicle
In unconformity over the above, the Neogene sedimentation starts
in a foreland basin of the Subandean. Initially defined as a series,
and later on as a formation, the Chaco Group (Stebinger, 1920)
includes and represents the largest part of the Cenozoic sequence of
the meridional Subandean (Upper Oligocene? - Pliocene). This unit
groups the Petaca, Yecua, Tariquía and Guandacay formations.
The lying Emborozú Formation is excluded from the group since it
has an unconforming basal relation, reflecting the initiation of a
different basin.
