margas.
Ciclo Andino I
continental fluvio-lacustre, eventualmente palustre y fluvio deltaico
arcillitas y margas multicolores. Esporádicamente intercalan
niveles de calizas arcillosas.
sporadic calcareous levels. The upper part displays the same
interbedding, but with greater shale and marl percentages. When
fractured, some of the shale levels feature a strong hydrocarbon
smell. To date, no fossils were found in these sediments, although
they are attributred an Upper Permian age.
Andean I Cycle
In unconformity over the preceding unit overlies the Beu Formation
(Schlagintweit, 1939), attributed to the Mesozoic. With these
sediments, an aeolian and fluvial continental regime begins in a rift
backarc basin. According to Beccar & Toledo (1990), it is made up
by basal conglomerates, and fine reddish brown silty sandstones,
with tangential crossbedding in several plays. Towards the top, the
crosbedding becomes more regular, and the grain diameter
increases. Environmentally, it is interpreted as a depositional cycle
of continental nature, which starts with fluvial deposits of moderate
to high energy; it later evolves into an aeolian dune environment
(desertic), with occasional fluvial events of little intensity. Close to
the top, it shifts gradually to an environment with greater hydric
influence, as shown by a change in climate from dry hot to humid
hot. This unit displays good indications of hydrocarbons, such as
fluorescence and oil impregnations, in the Tacuaral well.
In unconformity over the sandstones of the Beu Formation, overlie
sandstones with calcareous concretions, of yellowish, reddish and
purple colors, pertaining to the Eslabón Formation (Canedo-Reyes,
1960). They make up transitional sediments between deltaic and
coastal environments with marine influence, which deposited in a
backarc basin. This unit is made up by three members (Oller,
1986): a lower arenacous member over a conglomerate level; a
middle pellitic member, with thin calcareous horizons containing
fossil plants and fish remanents, scales and teeth; and an upper
arenaceous member with conglomeradic lenses. It refers to a
fluviolacustrine continental sedimentary development, eventually
palustrine and fluviodeltaic, under hot arid and semi-arid climate
conditions. This fact would explain the profuse presence of
paleosols at different development levels (Beccar & Toledo, 1990).
The lacustrine event is likely to constitute a good source rock.
This unit has been attributed to the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian),
due to the presence of Gasteroclupea branisai remanents, just
like in the El Molino and the Cajones Formations of the Eastern
Cordillera and the South Subandean, respectively. The Eslabón and
Flora formations (calcareous sandstones and paleosoils) constitute
the facies equivalent to the El Molino Formation in the Eastern
Cordillera.
The Flora Formation (Perry, 1963), lying in conformity over the
preceding one, was also deposited in a conforming deltal and
coastal transitional environment with apparent marine influence,
and in the same back-arc basin. According to Oller (1986), it is
made up by multicolor claystones and marls. Sporadically, they are
interbedded by argillaceous limestone levels.
