Miraflores Syncline belt, and finally, the western lineament,
pertaining to the Camargo Syncline. The region’s oldest trench
corresponds to the Miraflores Syncline, which underwent a
continuous sedimentary infill, probably from the Late Jurassic to
the Paleocene. The western and eastern trenches underwent an
infill activity later than the opening of the Cretaceous rift, from the
Cretaceous to the Paleocene.
Stratigraphy of the Andean Cycle I sediments in the Eastern Cordillera.
(Lohmann & Branisa, 1962), fluvial y transicional deltaico.
The sequence base is made up by thick reddish deposits
(conglomerates and red shale) pertaining to the Condo Formation
(Cherroni, 1963), with alluvial and fluvial facies, and the Kosmina
Formation (Cherroni, 1968), deposited in a fluvial environment,
with the same features as its arenaceous equivalents, the La Puerta
Formation (Lohmann & Branisa, 1962), of fluvial environment,
and the fluvial, and transitional deltaic Sucre Formation (Lohmann
& Branisa, 1962).
In the Cornaca area, in the Camargo region, basaltic breccia with
olivine and chromite-magnetite developed, which, according to
Tawackoli (1993) constitute evidence of the mafic magmatism of
the back-arc rifting. Rossling & Ballón (1996) report that, with an
age of 120.5 ± 0.5 Ma, the gabbro intrusion of Cerro Grande, also
in the Camargo area, could represent the oldest event of the
Cretaceous rifting.
Mertmann & Fiedler (1997) state that the La Puerta, Tarapaya,
Miraflores and Aroifilla formations must be attributed to a synrift
phase that featured active extensional tectonics. In the south, the
terrigenous clastic sedimentation is confined to a small graben
segment, limited by the Tocloca fault to the east, and another fault
to the west, which is possibly located between Atocha and Tupiza.
According to these authors, the graben segment was much wider in
the Potosí-Betanzos-Otavi area.
