Recientemente, Mamet (1994) y Mamet & Isaacson (1997)
estudiaron las algas calcáreas, foraminíferos (endothyridos y
fusulínidos) de la Formación Copacabana.
Ciclo Andino
Perú), cubriendo discordantemente a sedimentos neógenos,
Isaacson et al. (1995) discuss in detail the biostratigraphy of the
Upper Carboniferous of both wells. The sequence starts with
microfossil fauna (foraminiferans and algae) never described
before in South America. Comparison with North American and
European associations indicate a Lower Pennsilvanian age. These
facts do nothing but reinforce the link of the fauna collected in the
country within the Copacabana Formation: brachiopods, mollusks,
foraminiferans, conodonts, and others, with similar fauna in the
northern hemisphere. They also indicate that the sea transgression,
represented by the Copacabana Formation, started well before in
the north of Bolivia.
Recently, Mamet (1994) and Mamet & Isaacson (1997) studied the
calcareous algae, foraminiferids (endothyrids and fusulinids) of the
Copacabana Formation.
Andean Cycle
In the Madre de Dios basin, the Meso-Cenozoic is represented by
the Cretaceous Beu and Eslabón formations, the Paleogene Bala
and Quendeque formations, and the Neogene and Quaternary
Cobija and Candelaria formations, respectively.
No detailed description could be obtained on the stratigraphy of the
Cretaceous and Paleogene continental formations in the Madre de
Dios area. In the chapter on the Northern Subandean Ranges, these
rocks are described more extensively, and their main features can
be extended to this region. It is estimated that in the area, the Beu
Formation (Schlagintweit, 1939), of aeolian and fluvial nature, has
a thickness of over 500 m; it is settled in unconformity over
Paleozoic rocks of different ages. In unconformity over the former,
continue the deltaic and coastal sediments of the Eslabón (Canedo-
Reyes, 1960) and Flora (Perry, 1963) formations, exceeding
together 300 m of thickness. The Cretaceous sedimentation ends
with these two formations, and with a powerful basal
conglomerate, start the Neogene fluvial deposits of the Bala
Formation (Schlagintweit, 1939), of an approximate thickness of
200 m. The series continues with the Miocene sequences of the
fluviolacustrine Quendeque (Schlagintweit, 1939) y Charqui
(Canedo-Reyes, 1960) formations, altogether exceeding 4,000
meters, and ends already in the Neogene, with approximately 700
m thick powerful conglomerates of the Tutumo Formation (Dávila
et al., 1964).
Neogene-Quaternary of the Cobija Area
Most of the area is covered by recent sediments form the
Candelaria Formation (Iñapiri Formation in the Republic of Peru),
covering in unconformity slightly folded Neogene sediments of the
Cobija Formation which are rich in fossil vertebrate fauna.
For lack of more detailed areal geological research, the stratigraphic
relation between the Cobija and the Quendeque formations
is unknown. It is likely that both formations have different
accumulation areas. The Cobija and Candelaria formations are
known mainly in the northwestern end (Cobija-Bolpebra), while
the Bala and Quendeque formations were investigated at the oil
