Sparassocynus heterotopicus, Microtragulus bolivianus, Plaina sp.,
Macroeuphractus sp., Megatherium sp., Promacrauchenia sp.,
Praectenomys rhombidens, P. vagus, Posnanskytherium desaguaderoi,
Praectenomys rhombidens, P. vagus, Chapalmatherium
Macroeuphractus aff. moreni; cf. Sclerocalyptus sp., cf.
Plohophoros sp.; cf. Promacrauchenia sp.), Posnanskytherium
especies corresponden a Glyptodon sp., Megatherium cf.
americanum, Pseudomegatherium medinae, Scelidodon chiliense,
Macrauchenia ullomensis, Onohippidium (Parahipparion)
bolivianum y Cuvieronius tarijensis.
The Umala Formation (Meyer & Murillo, 1961) was deposited
during the Pliocene, in a alluvial and fluvial plain of a foreland
basin in the Eastern Cordillera. It is made up by argillaceous
sandstones interbedded with shale. Conglomeradic sandstones and
abundant tuffaceous levels are also present. With an age of 5.348 ±
0.003 Ma (Lower Pliocene), “Tuff-76” makes up the base of the
Umala Formation. The main fossil vertebrate found in the Umala
Formation are Sparassocynus heterotopicus, Microtragulus
bolivianus, Plaina sp., Macroeuphractus sp., Megatherium sp.,
Promacrauchenia sp., Praectenomys rhombidens, P. vagus,
Posnanskytherium desaguaderoi, Praectenomys rhombidens, P.
vagus, Chapalmatherium saavedrai (Marshall et al., 1992).
During the Upper Pliocene, and in unconformity, more than 700 m
of clastic rocks formed by polymictic conglomerates, sandstones
and volcanic ashes of the Topohoco Formation deposited over the
Paleozoic and Oligo-Miocene rocks (Ascarrunz et al., 1967). This
unit was deposited in an alluvial plain with marked fluvial
influence. The conglomerate clasts in this formation are made up
by Paleozoic, sub volcanic rocks and tertiary lavas. This formation
is equivalent to the Pérez Formation, to the West, and the Taraco
Formation of the North Altiplano.
Beneath the fluvial-glaciar and glaciar Pleistocene deposits, there
is a deposit of somewhat consolidated clastic Plio-Pleistocene
sediments, of about 500 m of thickness, belonging to the La Paz
Formation (Gregory, 1913). These rocks relate to sedimentites of
fluvial and fluvial lacustrine origin. Due to the strong erosion and
the nature of its sediments, badlands and sedimentary pillars up to
20 m high were formed (Valle de la Luna). The formation is made
up by clays, sands and pebbles poorly selected, in general, and
poorly consolidated, in part, by carbonate cementation. The La Paz
Formation lies in unconformity over Devonian, Cretaceous and
Paleogene strata. Over the Cota Cota Tuff and “Tuff-76” (5.4 Ma),
and underneath the Chijini and Ayo Ayo tuffites (2.8 Ma), the
largest amount of this formation’s mammalians were collected:
Macroeuphractus aff. moreni; cf. Sclerocalyptus sp., cf.
Plohophoros sp.; cf. Promacrauchenia sp.), Posnanskytherium
desaguaderoi, and likely a new species of Posnanskytherium
(Marshall et al., 1992). According to Thouveny & Servant (1989),
the magnetostratigraphic study shows that the deposit of the lower
and middle parts took place during the Gauss age (3.4 – 2.48 Ma).
Overlying are about 6 to 8 m of horizontal sediments of Pleistocene
age belonging to the Ulloma Formation (Ahlfeld, 1946), which fill
a fluvial and lacustrine plain with evident volcanic influence.
These sedimentites deposited in the foreland basin of the Eastern
Cordillera. The formation is made up tuff sands interbedded with
silt and gravel. These rocks are considered to relate to sedimentites
deposited by the former Lake Ballivián. The complete list of the
Upper Pleistocene vertebrate fauna found in these sediments can be
found in Marshal et al. (1992). The main species relate to
Glyptodon sp., Megatherium cf. americanum, Pseudomegatherium
medinae, Scelidodon chiliense, Macrauchenia ullomensis,
Onohippidium (Parahipparion) bolivianum and Cuvieronius
tarijensis.
