Vilama-Coruto Caldera Complex, located in the Bolivian-
Argentine border, is included and described in this unit.
The Andean II Cycle starts with the polymictic conglomerates and
sandstones of the San Vicente Formation (Courty, 1907), which
are laid in uncomformity over the fluvial sandstones and silt of the
Potoco Formation from the preceding cycle. The San Vicente
Formation represents a diversity of continental environments:
alluvial fan prograding facies, braided river fluvial and lacustrine.
All these facies have marked volcanic influence. Towards the
center of the basin , they grade to shale and tuffites. Saline horizons
are also interbedded.
In the eastern sector of the Altiplano, the Quehua Formation
(Geobol, 1963) is deposited over the San Vicente Formation. It is
made up by a fluvial and lacustrine sequence with volcanic
influence, which deposited in a backarc and foreland basin of the
Eastern Cordillera.
The Middle Miocene Chocaya Formation (Ahlfeld, 1946) is
represented by coarse-grained continental and volcanic clastics
displaying fast facies changes towards shale and light gray tuffites.
South Western Altiplano
Just like in the eastern sector in the western Altiplano (Volcanic
Belt), the sequence starts with the conglomerates of the San
Vicente Formation described above, which are overlain by the Suri
Pujio and Esmoruco formations.
In the area if Ollagüe Volcano/San Agustín, Soniquera and the
Minas Range, the Suri Pujio Formation (Baldellón, 1995) consists
of detrital flows, volcanic breccias, and andesitic lavas, together
with fluvial conglomerates and sandstones (Almendras et al.,
1997). This unit has a variable thickness reaching 2700 m (García
& Baldellón, 1997). The interlayered lavas were dated at 21.93 ±
0.16 Ma (Fornari et al., 1997). Different volcanic bodies cross
through the Suri Pujio Formation.
Further east, in the San Pablo de Lípez and Picalto areas and along
the San Antonio River, the San Vicente Formation is overlain by
the Esmoruco Formation (Choque & Mamani, 1997), which
pertains to restricted basin sediments in fluviolacustrine facies.
This unit is made up by volcanic agglomerates resulting from the
Rondal lavas, as well as gypseous claystones and sandstones
interbedded with polymictic conglomerates. Towards the top, the
fluviolacustrine sequence is interbedded by agglomerates with
volcanic lithics (García & Baldellón, 1997).
Andesitic–basaltic lavas deposited in a intra-arc and backarc basin,
and dated at 22.9 ± 0.9 Ma (Kussmaul et al., 1975), pertaining to
the so-called Rondal Event (Meave, in Fernandez et al., 1972),
overlie the San Vicente and Esmoruco formations.
In the Ollagüe Volcano sector, the conglomerates of the Suri Pujio
Formation gradually cross over to the Julaca Formation (Velasco
