and loess over gneiss in the terraces of the Ried<br />

Kremser Wachtberg. A historic prime vineyard<br />

was recently purchased: the Ried Schreck in<br />

Stein. The Riesling from this schist site promises<br />

a mineral fireworks – Krems rocks with<br />

wine.<br />

Medium yellow with silver highlights. Pineapple and mango<br />

mingle with smoky mineral components and nuances of<br />

mandarin zest. Highly elegant and complex with delicate<br />

honey-laced peach fruit enhanced with juicy acidity in a<br />

taut structure. The multifaceted finish is sweetly extracted<br />

and very long. Extraordinary ageing potential.<br />

Medium green-yellow with silver highlights. Ripe yellow apple,<br />

tobacco nuances, delicate orange zest and subtle herbal<br />

spice. Very elegant with juicy acid enhancing the refreshing,<br />

silky texture, sweet apple and quince flavours. Salty minerals<br />

join in on the very long finish. Superb ageing potential.<br />

Everything changed in 2008 at Lesehof<br />

Stagård – not only for Urban Stagård,<br />

but also for his wife Dominique, who<br />

jointly manage this wine estate. They took over<br />

the winery from Urban’s parents and from the<br />

first day onward completely transformed<br />

everything. Contrary to the generations before<br />

them, they no longer wanted to produce wines<br />

that simply quenched thirst, but rather wines<br />

that could tell the story of their ideas, the vines<br />

and the vineyards. They immediately converted<br />

to organic cultivation and defined goals to<br />

achieve this step-by-step. They aspired to the<br />

production of bold, exciting and authentic<br />

wines – wines for which evolution and tradition<br />

were two sides of the same coin. Most of<br />

all, they wanted to produce Riesling, because<br />

they simply preferred its taste to any other variety.<br />

This is significant not only because their<br />

passionate approach to winemaking is so different,<br />

but because Riesling is also the predestined<br />

variety for this area. Riesling’s affinity to<br />

meagre, rocky soils, late-ripening sites and the<br />
