GAGER
The success story of the Gager wine estate
began in 1984 when Josef Gager
grew his first vines and bottled his
first 800 bottles. The very special attributes
of the terrior were immediately evident.
Since then, the terroir has inspired the quality
and character of the wines. “Our soils are
heavy and fertile with plenty of nutrients,
humus and vitality. The climate provides
abundant sunshine. We attempt to unite all
of these elements in a liquid form,” explains
Josef Gager, encapsulating his philosophy.
Since 1988, his range of wines included
what continues to be the producer’s top
wine: the blend “Quattro”. It was one of the
first red wine blends in Austria and became
Gager’s draughthorse and trademark. This
wine embodies not only the principles of the
winery, but the label design also became the
winerys logo. In the evolving success story,
the operation grew to a size that became difficult
to manage alone and Josef enlisted the
help of his son Horst. With the fresh breeze
of youth and the know-how of the father,
the winery was modernized between 2004
and 2006.
The Gager wine estate now produces wine
from 38 vineyard hectares (93 acres) planted
with Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah,
and even the exotic Tannat. Regardless of
which Gager wine is in the glass, the phrase
“deep dark, concentrated and compact -
wine with character” is always an apt description.
Mitterberg 2015
Dark ruby with an opaque core, purple highlights and a thin,
transparent rim. Inviting blackberry, ripe cherry, and lingonberry
with delicate nuances of caramel and nougat
comprise an attractive bouquet. Sweetly extracted fruit is
elegantly highlighted with juicy acid and nicely textured
with well-integrated tannin. Wild cherry and chocolaty nuances
linger on the marvellously long finish. Superb ageing
potential.
