VULKANLAND STEIERMARK
Riegersburg
The Eisenberg, a wine region with incomparable
merits and attributes, is
quite special to Mathias Jalits. And
that is exactly how his wines taste. He strives
to express the unique character of this region
in each bottle. “The Eisenberg should be tangible
on the palate when you drink our
wines,” is the credo of this vintner from Südburgenland
(Southern Burgenland). Sandy,
clayey and heavy loam soils of a concave site
that opens towards the southeast – and protected
from the icy north winds – provide ideal
conditions for powerful, mineral Blaufränkisch
to thrive. Blaufränkisch is the
winery’s main variety, but Cabernet Sauvignon,
Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zweigelt and a tiny
amount of Welschriesling also grow in the
vineyards on the slopes of the Eisenberg.
Mathias Jalits is the fifth generation of his
family to practice viticulture here. He took
over management of the family enterprise in
2001 and has since steadily expanded the
vineyard area while keeping a persistent focus
on quality and regional identity. He is not
one to brave risky experiments, neither in the
vineyard, nor in the cellar. “Traditional regional
identity should be reflected in my
wines. That is me, that is Südburgenland, and
that is how our wines should be.” That
Mathias Jalits is spot-on with his philosophy
is repeatedly confirmed by outstanding Falstaff
wine ratings. We can really look forward
to tasting superb wines. from this producer
in the coming years.
Dark ruby with purple highlights and pale rim. Black forest
berry fruit, blackberry and wild cherry mingle with subtle
floral and mineral components. Juicy acid and silky tannins
build an elegant, well balanced structure. Sweet extract
joins in on the very long mineral finish. Already very
seductive, but will continue to age gracefully.
