Stift Göttweig has been producing wine<br />

for over 900 years. When Fritz Miesbauer<br />

took over management in 2006, he<br />

whipped the operation back into shape and<br />

placed it in the top league of Austrian wine<br />

producers. Stift Göttweig is a splendid Benedictine<br />

monastery majestically perched atop<br />

the Göttweig Mountain on the south bank of<br />

the Danube River opposite the wine city<br />

Krems. The monastery was built according to<br />

the plans of the famous architect Johann<br />

Lukas von Hildebrandt and is famed far beyond<br />

the Austrian borders. The fresco by Paul<br />

Troger that decorates the impressive imperial<br />

staircase is a baroque masterpiece and a miniature<br />

copy of this adorns the capsules of every<br />

bottle of Stift Göttweig wine. Benedictine<br />

monks settled here in 1083 and became<br />

known for the quality of their wines in the<br />

16th century, when the wines were in high de-<br />
