PRIELER
Wine is poetry in the bottle.” One
could not better describe the wines
of this superb, small family winery.
Family Prieler’s central focus is the vineyard.
The largest share of the vineyard area is found
near the village of Schützen am Gebirge, but significant
vineyards are also located in Oggau and
Oslip. In each place there is a different soil composition,
which is the explanation for various
grape varieties finding an ideal place to thrive.
Despite this, a sensitive and experienced hand is
required to produce top white and red wines
consistently each year. Georg Prieler, the young
oenologist with overseas experience, possesses
these attributes and is supported by his sister Silvia,
doctor of microbiology, and his parents. He
is a true all-rounder able to make good decisions
intuitively. This is a good thing that results
in memorable wines. Terroir is not an empty
word for Family Prieler. Just get Georg talking
about this subject and watch his eyes light up.
Limestone soils are found in the Seeberg and
Sinner vineyards toward Lake Neusiedl and this
is the source for the great white wines of the
producer. Ungerbergen has sandy loam with
pebbles making it an ideal place for late ripening
varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. Goldberg, indisputably
the best vineyard of the estate, offers
meagre mica schist and is perfect for Blaufränkisch,
the most traditional and important variety
for the producer. Family Prieler focuses their
wine-making efforts on the terroir characteristics.
For this reason the Pinot Blanc Seeberg ferments
in stainless steel after extended maceration
to preserve its refreshing delicacy. The
Blaufränkisch Johanneshöhe is matured in
wooden casks and the Blaufränkisch Goldberg
achieves its incredible suppleness during its up
to 26 month maturation in 500-litre wooden
barrels. The Goldberg is an extraordinary wine
and was the champion of the Falstaff Reserve
Trophy in 2005 and 2008. The Prieler family
has also had repeated success with their Pinot
Blanc wines in the Falstaff Burgunder Trophy
winning two of four trophies with Pinot Blanc
Seeberg 2004 and the extraordinarily matured
Chardonnay Seeberg 2001. The Leithaberg
wines were launched in the assortment of wines
with enthusiastic public response and consistently
receive top placements in blind tastings.
Brilliant medium yellow with silver highlights. Fine nuances
of pineapple, baked apple, caramel and lime zest. Juicy
acid lifts delicate sweet fruit and subtle oak is nicely integrated.
Vanilla and orange join in on the long mineral finish.
Extraordinary ageing potential.
