Südsteiermark is known for its classy, crisp, highly aromatic wines, in particular
from its leading grape, Sauvignon Blanc. 2,563 vineyard hectares also provide
splendid opportunities for a broad varietal spectrum ranging from Welschriesling
to Morillon and Muskateller to Traminer. Although one of the most charming
vineyard landscapes in Europe, grape growing on extremely steep slopes
demands painstaking labour.

ust as diverse as the grape varieties are
the soils of Südsteiermark, which include
sand, shale, schist, marl and shell
limestone. The warm, humid Mediterranean
climate determines the vegetation cycle. Cool
nights enhance nuanced aromatic intensity
and noble character of the white wines. From
the lean, fruity young wines called “Junker”
that herald each new vintage, to the elegant
“Klassik” wines to the mature, richly extracted
single-vineyard wines, vintners demonstrate
the full potential of the region throughout.
Sauvignon Blanc from Südsteiermark has
achieved international recognition as one of
the world’s very best examples of the variety
thanks to continual development of a unique,
terroir-driven style. Open-minded winegrowers
ensure that the high standards and quality
are maintained by bringing home knowledge
and know-how from trips and work experience
abroad. There is also an excellent viticultural
school in Silberberg that continues
to prepare new winegrowers with skills and
experience through theoretical and practical
courses.
No matter the season, it is always well worth
