After gaining experience in California<br />
and abroad, Paul Achs joined the<br />
family winery in Gols as winemaker<br />
in <strong>19</strong>91. Only four short years later, he was<br />
awarded “Falstaff Vintner of the Year”. Already<br />
renowned for its excellent white wines<br />
and ability to combine tradition with modern<br />
vinification technology, the winery is<br />
now also famed for its red wines. The Achs’<br />
wines are by no means “show wines,” but<br />
rather are characterized by elegance and finesse.<br />
Red wine now makes up 90% of the<br />
total production. The red wines, Pinot Noir,<br />
Blaufränkisch Ungerberg and the “Pannobile”<br />
blend, as well as Chardonnay and Sauvignon<br />
Blanc are matured in small oak barrels.<br />
A maximum yield of 3,000 kilos of fruit<br />
per hectare help ensure the high quality of<br />
the wines. These efforts are well-rewarded;<br />
Paul Achss wines have long been among the<br />
very best reds that Austria has to offer. This<br />

is confirmed in the annual Falstaff Red <strong>Wine</strong><br />
Premiere where Paul Achs is repeatedly found<br />

Dark ruby with purple highlights and a pale rim. Still<br />
rather restrained, but aeration reveals dark forest berry<br />
jam, fresh blackberry, herbs, tobacco nuances and<br />
abundant dark minerals. Firm and tightly-woven tannins<br />
are well integrated in black berry fruit. A touch of<br />
chocolate accompanies the very long finish. Outstanding<br />
ageing potential.<br />
