The Tement family winery is situated on
a small mountain plateau just above the
impressive Zieregg vineyard. From here
the visitor can enjoy a stunning view that
reaches far into neighbouring Slovenia on one
side and southeastern Styria on the other. The
winery is now in its third generation with
Armin and Stefan Tement in the starting
blocks. The brothers intend to continue the
same conscientiousness for quality and tradition.
Organically cultivated vineyards, rigorous
yield restrictions, and sustainable, selective
handcraft are the pillars of their efforts
and the foundation for elegant wines with authentic
expression of origin. The estate vineyards
have been vastly expanded over the past
years and have now reached their culmination
of 80 hectares (198 acres) in Austria. 60 % of
the vineyard area is planted with Sauvignon
Blanc, making it the winery’s most important
variety. Other typical regional varieties vinified
are Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller
(Muscat Blanc à petits grains), Morillon
(Chardonnay), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc),
and Gewürztraminer. 97 % of the production
is white wine and 3 % is red wine from varieties
like Zweigelt or Pinot Noir. Diverse botrytized
sweet wines round out the assortment.
White wines are produced in three different
categories: regional wines, village wines, and
single-vineyard wines. Wines are spontaneously
fermented, slowly and gently. Whether fermented
in steel tank or large neutral oak cask,
the wines are always defined more by their origins
than their vinification. The regional
wines are assembled from various Tement estate
vineyards. To preserve the aroma and
fruitiness of these wines, they are usually fermented
in stainless steel and intended to be regional
and vintage representatives of their variety.
The Sauvignon Blanc Steirische Klassik is
the most important wine of this producer and
is followed by the Gelber Muskateller (Muscat
Blancà petits grains) and the Weissburgunder
(Pinot Blanc). The village and single vineyard
wines are the highest category of wines in the
Tement portfolio. Fully ripened grapes are
harvested late from the best sites and fermented
slowly, gently and spontaneously and they
usually mature in large neutral oak casks until
bottling. The single-vineyard wines are expres-
