wine is capturing the attention of a young, intellectual
public. It is an exciting niche and simultaneously
a field of interesting discussion.
Due to the large spectrum of grape varieties
cultivated and the highly diverse wine growing
areas with differentiating microclimates, the
wine enthusiast finds wines in nearly every
style in Austria. Cool climate white wines of
great finesse, fragile Pinot Noirs from cool climate
regions, and full-bodied, powerful reds
from the sun-pampered Burgenland that are
influenced by the warm, arid Pannonian Basin
– all are components of the multifaceted spectrum
of wines that Austria has to offer. Between
these styles one finds numerous other
rarities, old grape varieties and exquisite noble
sweet wine speciailties. In culinary terms Austria
is often called the “delicatessen of Europe”,
and this has also become true when it comes to
the country’s wines. The beauty of Austria’s
stunning landscapes is appreciated by anyone
who has ever travelled in the country. It is not
surprising that Austrian wine tourism thrives
and the cutting edge winery architecture is just
one of the notable details. A further pleasant
attribute for the traveller is that all of the country’s
wine-growing areas can be reached from
the metropolis of Vienna within a two-hour
drive. This convenient aspect also makes Austrian
wine country attractive for short trips. It
was a great honour, but not a surprise when
Austria won the prestigious accolade “Best
Wine Travel Destination Europe” at the international
Travvy Awards 2016 at a gala celebration
in New York. The Falstaff Ultimate Wine
Guide Austria 2018 will assist you in your
choice from the outstanding assortment of
wines available. This annual guide is an excerpt
from the Falstaff Weinguide and focuses
on those wines available on export markets.
The Falstaff Weinguide appears yearly in the
German language and includes descriptions of
wines from more than 460 different producers.
The scores for all the tasting notes in this book
are awarded on the international 100-point
scale and are handed over by the author in an
open tasting. The scores are a completely subjective
appraisal based on personal experience
with each particular wine and vintner. Of
course the very best way for you to experience
current dynamic development is to come to
Austria yourself and taste first-class wines directly
in their stunning place of origin. Finally,
I would like to thank the entire Falstaff publishing
team and the Austrian Wine Marketing
Board (AWMB) for their generous support,
participating vintners for their cooperation,
and, naturally, Julia Sevenich who has given
my texts her English voice.
