a thin, pale rim. Dark berry fruit, subtle herbal spice, black<br />

olive and subtle bitter chocolate. Juicy, refreshing acid<br />

structure and abundant tannin. Cherry fruit and minerals<br />

on the aftertaste. Already offering good drinking pleasure.<br />

The corporate concept of this winery<br />

should be signed “with the friendly help<br />

of the Mr. Ks”! Johann Schwarz, originally<br />

“just” butcher and grape grower, was for<br />

years a contracted source of prime fruit to the<br />

dessert wine guru Alois Kracher. In <strong>19</strong>99, the<br />

idea of bottling the exceptional Schwarz<br />

grapes on their own evolved between the two<br />

friends (now with the late Kracher’s son Gerhard)<br />

and the inspirational input of the Austrian<br />

vintner Manfred Krankl (sine qua non) in<br />

southern California was also employed. The<br />

idea was to breathe international flair into the<br />

Andau district on the border to Hungary. The<br />

concept resulted in one white, one red, and<br />

one rosé – 50 % of which are exported. The<br />

rosé was eventually replaced with a Strohwein,<br />

a dessert wine specialty made from<br />

grapes that have been left to raisin on reeds<br />

from Lake Neusiedl. Other additions to the<br />

assortment are the “A Lita” line and the “Kumarod”<br />

line both in white and red. The success<br />

of this venture brought the Schwarz Rot<br />

2002 a Falstaff trophy in the year 2004. The<br />

“Schwarz Rot” has since continued to be consistently<br />

among the top ten each year.<br />
