Pale golden yellow. Ripe peach and fresh apricot with
abundant minerality. Ripe, juicy tropical fruit with an elegant
spine of acid. Palpable residual sweetness is well integrated
and countered with a salty mineral character. A
highly individual Riesling style.
BRÜNDL-
MAYER
Many things are impressive at the
Bründlmayer estate: the people, the
quality of the wines, 80 hectares of
vineyards and, last but not least, the friendly,
humble man who has been responsible
for one of Austria’s model enterprises since
1980. Nearly every single wine, from the
lightest Grüner Veltliner to the red wine and
sparkling has the potential to be the vintage’s
best in its category. The vineyards are predominantly
terraced slopes and have been
cultivated organically since 2015. Around
one third of the vines are trained in the “lyra”
split canopy system. The vineyards are cultivated
sustainably and no herbicides are used.
The geologically oldest and certainly most interesting
site is the Zöbinger Heiligenstein.
This soil stems from the Permian period 270
million years ago. Desert sand with volcanic
components are the origin of the rock here.
Exceptional Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet
grow high on the mountain, which is part of
a wildlife preservation area. The most important
variety is Grüner Veltliner and it yields a
broad assortment of wines ranging from the
light, dry quality and kabinett wines all the
way through to the complex, concentrated
single-vineyard spätlese. Rieslings grow on
the meagre rock of the Steinmassl and Heiligenstein
vineyards and are famous for their
potential to reach an almost biblical age. Specialties
of the house are Chardonnay and the
other Burgundian varieties, Blauburgunder
(Pinot Noir), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc),
and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), which were
planted by Wilhelm Bründlmayer senior in
the 1950s and 1960s. The red wines make up
an impressive one third of production. Willi’s
father planted black varieties because his
wife enjoyed drinking a glass of red wine in
the evening. The red wines excel with finesse
rather than power. It is a challenge to ripen
red wine varieties in the marginal Kamptal
