International Relations involves building and maintaining relationships with other countries and international<br />
organisations; protecting and advancing national interests; and contributing to international security, economic<br />
development, the environment, democratic principles and human rights through aid programs, treaties and<br />
diplomatic services.<br />

� establish and maintain <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Government</strong> representation<br />
overseas, such as high commissions, embassies or consulates;<br />
� protect the interests of <strong>Australian</strong> citizens travelling or living<br />
overseas;<br />
� provide country-specific trade or travel advice, and direct<br />
assistance where necessary (including services to <strong>Australian</strong>s who<br />
are hospitalised or imprisoned in other countries);<br />
� advise the families of <strong>Australian</strong>s who are missing and coordinating<br />
evacuations from high-risk areas.<br />
� co-operate with other countries to ensure Australia's ability to resist<br />
foreign aggression or attack (including defence attaches,<br />
international defence cooperation, personnel exchanges between<br />
defence forces);<br />
� provide military advice to senior government representatives;<br />
� provide defence and strategic advice;<br />
� negotiate agreements for the deployment of defence resources;<br />
� participate in joint exercises and development programs.<br />
� provide services to representatives of foreign governments or<br />
international organisations;<br />
� assist representatives to establish and maintain diplomatic<br />
missions, such as high commissions, embassies or consulates<br />
(including advice on protocol guidelines and consular<br />
responsibilities for countries without diplomatic representation in<br />
Australia).<br />
� represent the <strong>Australian</strong> governments and provide diplomatic<br />
advice overseas;<br />
� conduct consultations with foreign governments and international<br />
organisations to maintain relationships and protect national<br />
interests.<br />
� negotiate a formal agreement or convention between Australia and<br />
one or more other countries;<br />
� form a bilateral partnership or a multilateral alliance which is<br />
binding under international law;<br />
� amend an existing treaty or withdrawing from a treaty (including<br />
consultation with stakeholders, the development of declarations<br />
that may contribute to the development or interpretation of<br />
treaties);<br />
� monitor treaty, convention or agreement conditions.<br />
