necessary to go much further than the combined production of fuels and electricity, and go
for chemicals, raw materials, lubricants, etc.
A crucial point for Brazil is to enhance sustainability of biofuels production. This
challenge should be faced not just because of the opportunities for trading, but mainly
because this is the only way to go. For most of the improvements required, law enforcement,
investments and the use of adequate technology will be enough. However, the real challenge
in Brazil is to improve wealth distribution and to prevent poverty. This is not a target to be
faced only by the ethanol industry, but a good example should be given by one of the most
successful economic sectors in the country.
Brazil can produce and export a reasonable amount of biofuels but must, above all,
exchange its expertise with other countries in order to make ethanol a real commodity.
