Raspberries, blueberries,<br />
blackberries: these are the new<br />
range of berries categorie which<br />
demand is increasing in the<br />
European market and, mainly,<br />
in United Kingdom, where the<br />
business in 2009 reached 272<br />
million pounds, according to<br />
Kantar Worldpanel, with<br />
25,000 new British families<br />
like new consumers of these<br />
products.<br />
The producers of Huelva<br />
have taken advantage of their<br />
long experience in the straw-<br />

Spain responds to the demand of berries in Europe and it is on the first place<br />
like European supplier with Huelva like the main zone with 955 hectares of<br />
raspberries and 763 hectares of blueberries and with Onubafruit like the<br />
company leader with 8,600 tons.<br />

the surface in the next years.<br />
Huelva is the Spanish<br />
reference of the specialties of<br />
berries. It monopolizes 80-90<br />
per cent of the raspberry production<br />
where the Onubafruit<br />
company has a supply of 4,500<br />
tons. The raspberry business<br />
is managed by 20 companies,<br />
although only Onubafruit mo-<br />
nopolizes almost 50 per cent<br />
of the commerce in Spain. The<br />
companies expect to reach<br />
1,000 hectares after this campaign.<br />
Fast growth<br />
But while the growth of the<br />
raspberry is stable, the<br />
blueberries and the blackberries<br />
have a good future.<br />
The blueberry will increase<br />
this year 10 per cent. Euroberry<br />
and Onubafruit are the<br />
main companies of this<br />
product in Spain with more<br />
than 1,000 tons. The rest of<br />
companies are still growing<br />
and they do not produce important<br />
volumes of product.<br />
The blackberry is another<br />
product that is increasing although<br />
in the last campaign<br />
the surface decreased 18 per<br />
cent being 60 hectares.<br />
