The market of the fresh pineapple
in Europe is supplied
just coming from out of the
EU producers, since only in
Europe the Canary Islands, situated
in Spain, have the tropical
climate for the development
of the crop.
In Spain, since it has become
a “commodity”, many
chains of supermarkets, in
their commercial campaigns
during Christmas time they
Pineapple becomes a
“commodity”
The sales of this tropical fruit have improved in the EU. In fact, it has become
a product of quick development in the last five years. December keeps on
being the month where the sales are better among the European consumers,
although the decrease of its price is becoming it a “commodity”.
supplied cheap pineapple being
one of the main lures to
attract customers of different
social status.
These popular measures
have caused logically the increase
of the sales, but the profit
of the operations, in many
cases, is a doubt.
In this situation, Costa Rica,
producing country par excellence,
leads the sendings of
pineapple to the Spanish country
one more year with 60,335
tons, two per cent more than
in 2008. In spite of this increa-
se of the volume of business
of this tropical product it is
not the best moment when
companies like Dole Food
Company and Fresh Del Monte
have closed some of their
facilities in Costa Rica due to
the loss in the value of the
dollar and other problems that
had caused that the operational
costs in the country were
not profitable.
These figures show the potential
of the Spanish companies
in this commerce, which
makes of Spain an important
importer country of the European
Union, and Holland as
the main destination of the
import. In fact, the Netherlands
is the main door of
many varieties of tropical
fruits. This is due not only to
the local consumption, but
because of the important role
of this country like the centre
of the fresh product distribution
for an important part of
Europe.
